The air in the ancient laboratory was thick with the scent of old parchment and something else—something ancient and unsettling that made Varrika's skin crawl. She limped alongside Merrin, her injured ankle a constant reminder of their precarious situation. The passageways seemed to twist and turn of their own accord, each corridor an echo chamber for the sounds of their labored breathing and the distant drip of water.
"You sure this is the right way?" Varrika asked, her voice barely above a whisper. Merrin nodded, though she wasn't entirely certain herself. The map in her mind was fuzzy at best, but they had to trust their instincts now. Merrin's exhaustion gnawed at her, but she pushed it aside. They couldn't afford to rest, not here in this place where the very walls felt alive.
As they rounded yet another corner, a sudden gust of air hit them, carrying with it the unmistakable scent of fresh rain and... something else. Something ancient and powerful that made Merrin's heart skip a beat. The corridor ahead opened up into a vast chamber, illuminated by a strange, pulsing light. In the center stood a massive mirror, its surface shimmering with an otherworldly energy.
"What is this place?" Varrika whispered, her eyes wide with awe and fear. Merrin shook her head slowly, her gaze fixed on the mirror. "I don't know," she replied, her voice barely audible. "But I have a feeling we're about to find out."
