The ground rumbled beneath their feet as they pressed deeper into the ancient tunnels, the stone groaning under the weight of centuries. Merrin felt the vibration travel up through her boots, a warning she couldn't ignore. The oily substance coating the floor moved with them, slithering around their feet in an unsettling dance. She caught sight of fresh graffiti scrawled across the wall—"Beware the Shadow's path"—and filed it away as another piece of the puzzle.

Then, the tunnel opened up into a vast chamber, and Merrin's breath caught in her throat. A colossal mirror dominated the space, its surface black as midnight, swallowing the meager light from their torches. The air here felt wrong, heavy with an oppressive presence that made her skin crawl. She could feel the Guardian's rage radiating outwards, a palpable force that made her fingers itch for a weapon.

Varikka stood beside her, her face set in a grim mask of pain and determination. Her injured ankle screamed protest with every step, but she refused to let it slow them down. Merrin knew they needed to find solid ground fast—the sound of rushing water echoing through the tunnels was a constant reminder of their near-drowning escape.

"Stay close," Merrin whispered, her voice barely audible over the creaking of the unstable structure around them. "We need to find a way across this chamber without falling into whatever's waiting below." She eyed the precarious-looking bridge warily, knowing one wrong step could send them plummeting to their doom.

The oily substance on the floor seemed to thicken here, clinging to their boots with disturbing tenacity. Merrin tried to ignore it, focusing instead on the task at hand—keeping Varikka upright and moving forward despite the agony of her injury. The weight of their predicament pressed down on them both, but they'd faced worse before.

"Let's move," she said finally, her voice tight with barely contained fear. "And watch your step."
