Phase: escalating

The water had risen to Merrin's chest now, lapping at her shoulders as she watched Varrika inch forward across the unstable ground. The dwarf's face was set in concentration, her good foot and injured ankle working together to keep her upright. "Wait," Merrin hissed, pointing at something visible in the swirling oil patterns. "I think I see a path here."
Varrika leaned closer, squinting through the dim light. After a moment, she nodded slowly. "Yes, I think I see it too—a spiral pattern." She glanced back at Merrin, her expression torn between hope and suspicion. "But you don't think this is another trap?"
Merrin shook her head, droplets of water flying from her wet hair. "I don't know. But it's the only thing here that looks intentional—everything else is just chaos." She took a deep breath, steeling herself against the cold and rising liquid. "We have to try something. The water's almost up to my neck."
Varrika nodded grimly, her grip tightening on the sword. "Alright. Stay close, and keep your eyes open for any changes in the pattern." She began to move again, each step a careful balancing act between her good foot and injured ankle. The water swirled around them both now, oily substance mixing with the rising liquid to create an eerie, shifting surface.
As they moved closer to the center of the chamber, where the spiral pattern was most visible, Merrin felt the air thicken around them. For a moment, she thought she could hear faint voices whispering just beyond hearing—she glanced at Varrika, but the dwarf's attention remained fixed on navigating the treacherous floor.
The water lapped at Merrin's chin now, cold and insistent. She knew they were running out of time, but with the distant roar of their pursuer growing louder by the second, she also knew they had no choice but to trust their instincts and hope that whatever lay ahead was less dangerous than what was behind.
She moved forward, one careful step at a time, her heart pounding in her chest as she followed Varrika deeper into the heart of the ancient, twisted chamber.
