Phase: escalating

Varrika dragged herself forward on sheer determination, her injured ankle screaming with each movement. The water was rising fast now, mere inches from the tunnel floor in places. She could feel the vibration of the current through the stone, a constant unsettling tremor that made her stomach twist. Every breath came heavy and labored as she forced herself deeper into the winding passage.
Around another bend, she spotted Merrin's body floating face-down in the churning water. Panic surged through Varikka's chest, but she didn't hesitate. She dove in, the icy current ripping at her clothes and hair as she fought against the flow.
Her powerful swimmer's strokes barely made progress against the rapids, but adrenaline kept her moving. She spotted Merrin's dark hair surface for a brief moment before being pulled under again. Varikka surged forward, finally reaching the halfing woman's limp form.
With a grunt of effort, she managed to get an arm around Merrin's chest and roll them both toward the nearest wall. The current tried to tear them apart, but Varrika dug her good foot into a gap in the stonework and held firm.
They surfaced together in a small alcove, gasping for air. Varikka pulled Merrin onto a narrow ledge, checking for signs of life while water dripped from her beardless jaw and soaked hair. The woman was breathing steadily, though unconscious.
"Merrin!" Varrika shouted, shaking the halfing's shoulders gently. "Stay with me!"
No response came except the sound of rushing water growing louder still. The dwarf cursed under her breath, knowing they needed to keep moving before The Guardian caught up or the rising waters finished what the rapids started.
She managed to get Merrin propped against the wall, then began the agonizing process of standing on her own two feet again. Her ankle screamed in protest, but she gritted her teeth and bore the pain. They had to keep moving forward through this treacherous maze if they wanted to live.
The tunnel ahead looked even more unstable than the last section - crumbling stonework, fresh cracks running along the ceiling, and that ominous glow from deeper within. But it was their only option now that the main passage behind them had collapsed completely.
Varikka half-carried, half-dragged Merrin forward, using her good leg to take most of the weight while supporting the smaller woman's shoulders with her free arm. Every step was a battle against pain and exhaustion, but the sound of rushing water kept them moving.
Around another bend, they found themselves in a chamber unlike any they'd seen before. The ceiling rose higher here, and strange glowing symbols pulsed along the walls. In the center stood a massive stone slab with something glittering atop it - the Time-Splitting Sword!
They were so close to their goal, but the rising water was getting dangerously close now, lapping at their boots as they approached the sword.
Varikka redoubled her efforts, practically carrying Merrin across the slick stone floor. They reached the slab just as a massive section of the ceiling collapsed behind them with a thunderous roar, sealing off their escape route permanently.
The dwarf grabbed the sword, its surface pulsing with ancient power that seemed to hum against her palm. They had done it - retrieved the legendary blade - but now they were trapped deeper than ever before. The sound of The Guardian's roar echoed through the newly collapsed tunnel section, a reminder that their troubles were far from over.
She helped Merrin to her feet once more, the woman groggy but conscious now. Together, they faced whatever lay ahead in this cursed tower, the Time-Splitting Sword held between them as their only hope against the darkness below.
