Phase: escalating

The sound of cracking stone echoed through the narrow passage, each impact sending fresh showers of dust raining down from above. Merrin pressed herself against the wall, her heart pounding in her chest as she watched Varikka struggle to squeeze through the makeshift opening they'd created. The dwarf woman's face was etched with pain and determination as she forced her injured ankle through the tight space, her teeth gritted against the agony.
On the other side of the crudely sealed passage, The Guardian's enraged roars continued to shake the very foundations of the ancient labyrinth. Merrin knew they had bought themselves only a few precious moments of respite—seconds ticking away as she waited for Varikka to emerge fully on their side. Every second felt like an eternity as she listened to the sound of cracking stone growing louder with each passing heartbeat.
Finally, Varrika stumbled free of the opening, collapsing against Elric's supporting arm with a gasp of relief. Merrin was at her side in an instant, helping to lower her friend to sit on the cold stone floor while keeping one eye fixed warily on the blocked passage behind them. The dwarf woman's splinted ankle had swollen further during their ordeal in the water, the bandages already dark with fresh blood seeping through.
"You okay?" Merrin asked softly, crouching beside Varikka and placing a hand on her shoulder. The dwarf woman nodded grimly, her breath coming in short pants as she fought to regain her composure. "I'll manage," she said, her voice hoarse with pain and exhaustion. "But we need to keep moving. That thing won't stay trapped forever."
Merrin knew she was right—they couldn't afford to linger here, not when The Guardian could break through at any moment. She scanned their surroundings quickly, her rogue's instincts already working overtime to find a way forward. The narrow passage continued deeper into the earth, descending gradually as it curved out of sight around a bend. A faint blue glow emanated from further ahead, casting eerie shadows that danced across the stone walls and ceiling.
"What do you think?" Merrin asked Elric, gesturing towards the glowing corridor. "Our only option seems to be down there." The human NPC studied the passage for a long moment before nodding slowly. "It's our best bet," he agreed reluctantly. "But stay alert—this place gives me the creeps."
Merrin helped Varikka to her feet, supporting most of the dwarf woman's weight as they began to make their way cautiously towards the glowing corridor. The sound of rushing water grew louder with each step, a constant reminder of how close they had come to drowning just moments before. As they rounded the bend, Merrin felt a shiver run down her spine—the blue glow was emanating from a narrow underground river that flowed beneath a precarious-looking stone bridge.
"Great," Varrika muttered beside her. "Another body of water." Merrin couldn't help but agree—it seemed like every turn in this cursed labyrinth led them back to the very element they feared most. But they didn't have time to dwell on their misfortune. The sound of cracking stone behind them had grown louder still, and Merrin knew that The Guardian would break through the barrier at any moment.
"Come on," she urged, helping Varrika across the narrow bridge with Elric bringing up the rear. Their footsteps echoed ominously off the stone walls as they hurried forward, the blue glow intensifying with each step. Whatever lay ahead in this ancient waterway, Merrin knew one thing for certain—they needed to put as much distance between themselves and The Guardian as possible.
The air grew colder still as they descended deeper into the earth, and Merrin couldn't shake the feeling that something worse than The Guardian awaited them in these dark depths. But for now, all that mattered was putting one foot in front of the other and staying alive long enough to find a way out of this nightmare.
