Merrin's eyes widen in alarm as she sees Varikka stumble, her injured ankle giving out completely. The rogue lunges forward instinctively, her wiry arms wrapping around their companion's waist just in time to prevent a fall. The sudden weight against her smaller frame makes Merrin grunt with effort, her own exhausted muscles straining under the unexpected burden. "Varikka!" she gasps, her dark eyes searching the woman's face for signs of pain or distress. The narrow stone tunnel presses in around them, ancient runes glowing faintly on the walls as Elric's torch flame casts flickering shadows. Each heavy impact from beyond the partially open door sends a fresh wave of fear through Merrin—The Guardian is breaking through, and they have no way to stop it.

With Varikka's full weight resting against her, Merrin struggles to maintain her balance on the precarious stone ledge. Her soaked travel leathers cling to her skin, water dripping from her short dark hair as she fights off a shiver. The adrenaline of their near-drowning escape is wearing thin, replaced by a gnawing exhaustion and the persistent ache in her skull from the noxious gas exposure. But there's no time to rest now—they need to move, to find solid ground before both of them tumble into whatever lies below.

"Here," Elric calls out, his good arm already wrapped around Varikka's other side. Together, he and Merrin manage to support their companion's weight, half-dragging her forward as they inch along the narrow passage. The stone beneath their feet trembles with each fresh impact from The Guardian, small pebbles and dust raining down from above. Merrin's head throbs in time with the distant roars, her vision occasionally blurring at the edges as she fights to stay focused.

"Can you put any weight on it?" she asks Varikka through gritted teeth, referring to the injured ankle. "We need to keep moving." The thought of being trapped in this collapsing tunnel, at the mercy of whatever lies ahead or behind them, sends a fresh jolt of panic through Merrin's already overtaxed system. She tightens her grip on Varikka, determined not to let their companion fall—no matter how much it costs her.

The narrow stone passage seems to stretch endlessly ahead, more ancient runes glowing faintly along the walls as they proceed deeper into the tower's depths. The sound of rushing water grows louder with each step, and soon they can see a faint glimmer of light in the distance—the pool area, perhaps? Or something even more dangerous? Merrin's rogue instincts scream at her to turn back, to find another way. But there is no other way. They're trapped between The Guardian and whatever lies ahead, with only their wits and what little gear they have left to see them through.

As they continue their precarious advance, Merrin feels the ground beneath them shift again—a soft rumble that has nothing to do with The Guardian's impacts. Her eyes widen in alarm as she spots a faint crack in the stone at her feet, barely visible in the flickering torchlight. "Varikka," she hisses urgently, "watch your footing here—the ground looks unstable." She shifts her weight carefully, trying to distribute Varikka's bulk more evenly between herself and Elric while avoiding the suspicious section of flooring.

The rogue's mind races as they move forward, her natural caution warring with the desperate need for speed. Every shadow could hide a pit trap, every loose stone could give way beneath their weight. And all the while, The Guardian's enraged roars echo through the tunnel, growing louder and more insistent with each passing moment. Merrin knows they can't keep this up forever—Varikka needs medical attention, she herself is running on fumes, and Elric is already injured. But for now, there's nothing to do but keep moving, one precarious step at a time, into whatever awaits them in the depths of this cursed tower.

  • Character memory: Persistent headache from noxious gas exposure affects concentration and balance
  • Character motivation: Desperate need for solid ground after near-drowning; growing anxiety about Varikka's safety and ability to move with sprained ankle
  • Threat assessment: The Guardian trapped but breaking through barrier; unstable tunnel sections with potential collapse risks; hidden pit traps or drop-offs in the unstable ground; unknown dangers deeper within the revealed chambers
  • Resource management: Standard gear minus Heavy Mace lost.
