Round 842

Phase: escalating

Merrin's wiry arms strained with the sudden weight against her shoulders as Varikka stumbled. The dwarf woman's injured ankle buckled under her own momentum, sending her stumbling toward the edge of the pit trap with its rising water below. "Varrika!" Merrin cried out, dropping to her knees instinctively and lunging forward to grab at the falling woman's arm. Her compact halfling hands closed around Varikka's wrist just in time, gripping tight as the dwarf's body slid inexorably toward the precipice.
"Hold on!" Merrin gasped through gritted teeth, her muscles burning with effort as she fought against gravity and Varrika's downward momentum. The wiry scout woman began to inch backwards across the treacherous ground, using her free hand and knees to push herself while maintaining a death grip on Varikka's arm. Every movement sent fresh jolts of pain through Merrin's exhausted body, but the terror of losing her friend drove her onward.
Varrika lay flat on her stomach beside the pit trap, her injured ankle screaming in protest as she tried to distribute her weight evenly. The sudden yank had nearly pulled Merrin over the edge herself, and now the wiry halfling was fighting to save them both while clinging precariously to solid ground. "You're okay," Merrin panted more for her own benefit than Varrika's as she slowly inched backwards across the stone. "You're okay."
The sound of crumbling stone echoed through the tunnel again, growing louder this time. The Guardian was getting closer, its pursuit undeterred by the collapsing passages. Elric's torch flickered overhead, casting eerie shadows on the walls as he trudged forward, keeping pace with Merrin's desperate retreat.
Varikka gritted her teeth against the agony in her ankle, knowing she needed to maintain her position or risk pulling Merrin into the water below. The sudden movement had sent fresh pain shooting up her leg, but she refused to give in to it. Instead, she focused on distributing her weight evenly across the ground and maintaining a firm grip on Merrin's outstretched hand.
"Merrin," Varrika called out, her voice strained with effort. "I'm here. Just keep pulling." She could feel the fear rising in her chest at the thought of falling into that dark water again after nearly drowning earlier, but she pushed it down. They had to get off this slope and find solid ground before both of them collapsed from exhaustion or danger returned.
Merrin nodded, not trusting herself to speak as she continued to inch backwards across the treacherous terrain. Her muscles screamed in protest with each movement, but the desperate need to save her friend kept her going. The ground beneath them felt unstable everywhere, and the sound of rushing water below was a constant reminder of how close they were to disaster.
Finally, after what felt like an eternity of tense maneuvering, Merrin managed to pull Varikka far enough back that both women lay flat on solid ground again. They collapsed in unison, panting heavily as the adrenaline began to fade. The Guardian's pursuit continued echoing through the tunnels, growing ever louder and closer with each passing moment.
"We need to move," Varrika gasped between breaths, her face flushed with exertion and pain. "Before that thing catches up or we're trapped here." She tried to push herself up onto her good leg, wincing as fresh agony shot through her injured ankle. The rising water in the pit trap below them gurgled ominously, a constant reminder of the danger they'd just escaped and the new threats looming ahead.
Merrin nodded wearily, forcing herself to her feet despite her own exhaustion and lingering headache from the noxious gas exposure. "Stay close," she said, offering a hand to Varrika. "We'll find a way out of this mess together." The wiry halfling's usual mischievous smile was nowhere to be seen, replaced by a look of grim determination as she helped her friend upright.
As they began to limp away from the pit trap, Elric fell into step beside them, his torch held high. "I think I saw a passage leading upwards earlier," he offered, his voice barely audible over the sound of rushing water and crumbling stone. "It might be our best chance at escaping this collapsing hellhole."
