The ground beneath them gave way with a sickening crack, and for a horrifying moment, Varikka felt herself falling into nothingness. But strong hands closed around her wrist, yanking her back onto solid ground with a jolt that sent fresh pain shooting up her injured leg. Merrin lay panting on her stomach at the edge of the slope, her face pressed against the stone as she gripped Varikka's arm with white-knuckled intensity.

The wiry halfling scout woman had managed to arrest Varikka's fall, but the sudden weight and momentum had nearly pulled her over the edge herself. Her compact frame trembled with exertion as she fought to maintain her grip, muscles straining against the pull of gravity. "You're okay," Merrin gasped, more for her own benefit than Varikka's. "You're okay." She slowly began to inch backwards, using her free hand and knees to push herself across the treacherous ground while keeping Varikka's arm clamped in a death grip.

Varikka lay flat on her stomach beside the pit trap, her injured ankle screaming in protest as she tried to distribute her weight evenly. The sudden near-miss had sent her heart pounding in her chest, and she could feel Merrin's fingers digging into her skin as the halfling woman fought to keep them both from falling. "Merrin," Varikka panted, her voice tight with pain and adrenaline. "Let go of me before you fall too."

But Merrin shook her head stubbornly, her dark eyes fixed on Varikka's face with a look of fierce determination. "Not a chance," she growled through gritted teeth. "I'm not letting go until we're both safe." She continued to inch backwards slowly and carefully, using every bit of her rogue training to maintain her balance on the slick stone surface.

As they moved away from the pit trap, the sound of crumbling rock echoed through the tunnel once again, growing louder by the second. The Guardian's pursuit seemed to be closing in, and the very air around them felt heavy with the weight of the stone above. Water pooled beneath their feet, making the ground slick and treacherous.

Elric trudged forward, his torch held high as he scanned the area for any sign of a way out. The flickering light cast eerie shadows on the walls, revealing ancient carvings that seemed to watch them with malevolent eyes. "We need to find solid ground quickly," the wizard warned, his voice tight with concern. "This entire section seems unstable."

Merrin nodded grimly, her attention divided between maintaining her grip on Varikka and searching for a safe path forward. The memory of nearly drowning in the previous chamber still haunted her, driving her urgency to find solid footing as quickly as possible. Her persistent headache from the noxious gas exposure didn't help matters either, making it difficult to focus through the growing panic.

Varikka's injured ankle throbbed with each movement, but she gritted her teeth against the pain, determined not to add to Merrin's burden. The warrior woman knew that her ability to fight was severely limited now, and the thought of being a liability in their current situation filled her with dread. But there was no time for self-pity - they needed to move, and move quickly.

As they continued to inch their way across the treacherous ground, Merrin's mind raced, trying to recall any details from their partial map that might suggest a safe route ahead. The last thing she wanted was to lead them straight into another deadly trap or collapse. But with visibility limited by the dim light and rising water levels, it was difficult to make out much beyond the immediate area.

The sound of falling rock grew louder still, and a fine dust began to rain down from above. Merrin's heart raced as she realized that time was running out - they needed to find shelter or risk being crushed by the collapsing tunnel. "Varikka," she gasped, her voice strained with exertion. "We need to move faster. The whole place is about to come down on us."

Varikka nodded, her face set in a mask of determination despite the pain shooting through her leg with every movement. Together, they redoubled their efforts, crawling and stumbling across the slick stone as quickly as their limited mobility would allow. The water level continued to rise around them, cold and unforgiving as it seeped into their clothing and equipment.

As they pressed onward, Elric suddenly held up a hand, signaling for them to stop. "Wait," he said, his voice barely audible over the growing cacophony of collapsing rock. "I think I see something - a passage leading upward." He pointed towards a narrow opening in the wall, partially obscured by shadows and rising water.

Merrin squinted at the opening, her rogue's eyes searching for any signs of danger or instability. It looked like their best option, but she couldn't shake the feeling that something was off about it. The ancient stonework seemed... different somehow from the rest of the tunnel. But with the Guardian's pursuit growing ever closer and the water levels rising fast, they didn't have many other choices.

"Stay close," Merrin whispered to Varikka as they began to make their way towards the opening. "And be ready for anything." The halfling woman's heart pounded in her chest as they approached the dark gap in the wall, her senses on high alert for any sign of traps or hidden dangers. She knew that every step forward could lead them into even greater peril, but the alternative - being caught by The Guardian or drowned in this ancient tomb - was far worse.

As they reached the opening, Merrin paused to examine it more closely. The stonework was indeed different from the rest of the tunnel, and she spotted what looked like a hidden mechanism near the entrance. Her rogue's instincts screamed at her to be cautious, but the sound of rushing water and crumbling rock urged them forward.

"Wait," Elric said suddenly, his voice tinged with concern. "There might be a trap here - I can sense magical energy emanating from the stones." He raised his staff, ready to cast a spell if needed, while Merrin prepared herself to disarm any physical traps she could find.

Varikka shifted her weight carefully, trying to keep as much pressure off her injured ankle while still maintaining a fighting stance. She knew that in her current condition, she'd be of limited use in a fight, but she refused to let her companions down.

Merrin took a deep breath, steeling herself for what was to come. She reached out with trembling fingers towards the hidden mechanism, her mind racing through every disarming technique she knew. The sound of rushing water grew louder still as the water level continued to rise, and the rumble of collapsing rock echoed ominously through the tunnel.

With a silent prayer to any gods who might be listening, Merrin began to carefully examine the trap mechanism, her quick hands working with practiced precision despite her exhaustion and fear. The Guardian's pursuit seemed to be closing in with every passing second, and the rising water threatened to swallow them whole if they didn't find a way out soon.

The fate of their entire party hung in the balance as Merrin worked feverishly to disarm the deadly trap before it was too late.
