Phase: escalating

Merrin's heart raced as she and Varikka stumbled back toward the hidden chamber, the sound of rushing water growing louder with each passing moment. She could feel the ground shifting beneath her feet, the stone groaning in protest as water began to pool around their ankles. The air was thick with moisture and the musty smell of ancient stone, making it difficult to breathe. Her ankle throbbed with each step, a sharp reminder of their predicament.
Varikka moved beside her, her face set in a grim mask of determination despite the pain that had to be wracking her body. The dwarf woman's breathing was labored, but her grip on Merrin's shoulder remained firm. "I can help you walk," she grunted, "but I'm not sure how much longer my ankle will hold up." She glanced back at Merrin, concern evident in her eyes. "We need to find a way out of here before this rising water drags us both under."
Merrin nodded, trying to ignore the pain shooting up her leg with each step. "I know," she gasped, her voice tight with fear and exertion. "But even if that means backtracking, we need to find solid ground before it's too late." She glanced around frantically, trying to remember the layout of the room they'd just fled. Had there been any high ground? Any place where they might escape the creeping tide?
The answer came as a loud cracking sound echoed through the chamber, followed by the sound of stones shifting. The ground beneath their feet began to slope downward, and suddenly the water was rising even faster. Merrin's heart leapt into her throat as she realized what was happening - the entire chamber was filling with water, and they were trapped inside.
"Varikka!" she cried out, grabbing the dwarf woman's hand. "We have to move now! I know my ankle is killing me but if we stay here, this water is going to drag us both under." She struggled to keep her balance on the slippery floor, the cold water already lapping at their ankles. The air was thick with the feeling that something was about to give way, and Merrin knew they had only moments before the entire chamber was flooded.
"Can you help me up?" she pleaded, looking into Varikka's determined face. "We'll need to limp our way back to that hidden chamber. It's our only chance of finding solid ground before the deluge claims us too."
