Merrin's ankle throbbed with each step, a sharp reminder of their predicament as she and Varrika stumbled back toward the hidden chamber below the collapsed landing. The sound of rushing water grew louder, more insistent, as if the ancient tower itself was crying out its final warning. She could feel the ground shifting beneath her boots, the stone groaning in protest as water began to pool around their feet.

"We can't keep pushing on like this," Merrin gasped, her voice tight with fear and exertion. "This rising water is going to drag us under if we don't get somewhere stable soon." She glanced back at Varikka, seeing the dwarf's face set in a grim mask of determination despite the pain that had to be wracking her body. "Even if that means backtracking, we need to find solid ground before it's too late. Help me limp back to that hidden chamber. It's our only hope for a moment's respite from this deluge." Her mind raced, trying to remember the layout of the room they'd just fled. Had there been any high ground? Any place where they might escape the creeping tide?

Varikka moved with surprising speed despite her injury, grabbing the leather-bound book from where it lay half-buried in rubble. "Gods, Merrin, I don't like this any more than you do," she grunted, shoving the tome into a waterproof pouch at her belt. "But... you're right. We're both on our last legs here, and if we keep pushing through this rising water, we'll end up as drowning corpses just like the rest of our party." She paused, her dark eyes meeting Merrin's. "I'll grab that book for you - don't want it getting swept away in this deluge. And... I'm sorry about your ankle. I know how much it must be killing you to push through like this."

Merrin felt a surge of gratitude toward the dwarf, even as the cold water lapped higher around her boots. Together, they might just survive this ordeal - but first, they needed solid ground and a moment to catch their breath. "Let's move," she urged, ignoring the pain shooting up her leg with each step. "And keep your eyes open for any sign of... well, anything that might help us out of this mess."
