Round 800 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

Merrin and Varikka reach the top of the stairs, the water lapping at their boots, but a narrow ledge leads out into a small landing. The Guardian emerges from the rubble below, her eyes fixed on them with an unnerving intensity. The air is thick with the musty scent of ancient stone and decay, and the sound of rushing water grows louder. Varikka's injured ankle throbs in agony as she takes a step forward, her mace clutched tightly in her hand. The Guardian begins to climb the stairs, her movements economical and deadly. Merrin readies her crossbow, loading a bolt as she scans the landing for any sign of danger. The water continues to rise, the sound of it growing louder with each passing moment. Varikka's face is set in a determined expression, but her eyes betray a hint of fear as she glances at Merrin.
I let out a breath I didn't realize I was holding as we make it to the top of the stairs, my heart pounding in my chest. The water laps at my boots, cold and treacherous, but for now we've gained a small reprieve.
I load my crossbow with quick, efficient motions, my eyes scanning the landing for any sign of danger. But there's nothing - just the musty scent of ancient stone and decay, and the sound of rushing water growing louder with each passing moment.
Varikka stands beside me, her face set in a determined expression, but I can see the fear in her eyes as she glances at me. Her injured ankle throbs, I know, the pain evident in the tightness of her jaw and the way she shifts her weight from foot to foot.
The Guardian emerges from the rubble below, her eyes fixed on us with an unnerving intensity. She begins to climb the stairs, her movements economical and deadly. I ready my crossbow, my finger hovering over the trigger as I aim for her heart.
But even as I do, I know that we're far from safe. The water continues to rise, the sound of it growing louder with each passing moment. And the landing we stand on is narrow, with no easy way out.
I glance at Varikka, my brow furrowed in concern. "We need to keep moving," I murmur, my voice low and urgent. "But where do we go from here?"
My eyes dart to the map, looking for any sign of a safe path forward. But there's nothing - just the same treacherous tunnels and unstable stairways that have plagued us since we first entered this damned place.
And as The Guardian draws closer, her eyes locked on ours with an unnerving intensity, I know that we're running out of time. We have to make a choice - and quickly.
