The sound of rushing water filled the chamber, growing louder by the second. Merrin's heart pounded in her chest as she realized what it meant - another flood was coming, and fast. She glanced around frantically, searching for any sign of escape or higher ground, but the room seemed to offer no solutions.

Varrika leaned heavily against the wall opposite, her face pale and drawn as she favored her injured ankle. "That was...close," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. Merrin nodded, scanning the room for any signs of their next move. The creature's glowing orbs still pulsed in the darkness beyond, a constant reminder that they weren't alone down here.

"We need to find higher ground," Merrin said, her eyes darting around the chamber. "Somewhere we can defend ourselves properly." She moved towards what looked like a crumbling staircase, her hand reaching out to steady herself against the slick stone walls.

The air was thick with dust and the faint scent of decay, making it hard to breathe. Varrika followed, her movements slow and laborious as she tried to keep weight off her injured ankle. Merrin glanced back at her friend, concern evident in her eyes. "We'll figure something out," she said, more to reassure herself than Varrika.

As they climbed the stairs, the sound of water grew louder still. Merrin's heart raced as she realized what it meant - another flood was coming. They needed to find higher ground fast, but the staircase seemed endless, each step more precarious than the last. The stone beneath their feet groaned ominously, as if the very structure was warning them away.

Varrika stumbled on a loose stone, crying out in pain as her ankle twisted again. Merrin caught her before she could fall, wrapping an arm around her waist to support her weight. "Come on," she urged, half-dragging her friend up the stairs. "We have to keep moving."

The sound of water grew louder still, and suddenly they emerged into a vast chamber. The ceiling was impossibly high above them, lost in shadows, and the floor below was already covered in several inches of rushing water. Merrin's heart sank as she realized their predicament - they were trapped between rising waters on both sides.

Varrika leaned against her heavily, panting with exertion and pain. "What now?" she asked, her voice tight with fear. Merrin scanned the room, searching for any sign of escape or shelter. The water was already up to their ankles, cold and swift as it flowed past them.

"We need to find higher ground," Merrin said again, more urgently this time. She spotted a narrow ledge running along one wall, just above the water line. "There!" she pointed. "We can get up there and wait for the flood to pass."

Varrika nodded, her face set with determination despite the pain in her ankle. Together, they began to pick their way across the chamber, stepping carefully over loose stones and avoiding patches where the floor seemed particularly weak. The water rose steadily around them, now swirling around their knees.

As they reached the ledge, Merrin helped Varrika up first, then scrambled after her. They collapsed onto solid stone, gasping for breath as the water continued to rise below. "We made it," Varrika said, her voice filled with relief and exhaustion.

Merrin nodded, but her eyes were still scanning the chamber for any sign of movement or danger. The creature's glowing orbs had disappeared, but that didn't mean they were safe. She knew they needed to rest and recover, but first they had to ensure no more threats lurked in this ancient tomb.
