Round 748 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

As Merrin takes a step forward, her foot slips on loose debris, sending her stumbling towards the edge of the chasm. She manages to catch herself at the last moment, her heart racing with fear. Varikka's injured ankle protests with every step she takes, making her lean heavily on Merrin for support. "Watch your step, Merrin," she warns, her voice strained with pain and urgency. "We can't afford to slip up now."
The Guardian's heavy footsteps grow louder, echoing off the walls as she pursues them through the collapsing passageway. The air is thick with dust and debris, making it difficult to see more than a few feet ahead. Suddenly, a section of the wall collapses behind them, sending a shower of rubble down the corridor. Merrin and Varikka barely avoid being crushed, but their torches are extinguished in the process. The darkness is total, and they're forced to rely on their other senses to navigate. Merrin fumbles in her pack for a spare tinderbox, trying to coax a spark into life. "I'll try to light this," she says, her voice muffled by the darkness. "But we need to keep moving."
I let out a shaky breath as I feel Varikka's weight lean against me, her injured ankle clearly causing her pain. The ground beneath our feet shifts again, sending a tremor through the passageway and causing a section of the wall to collapse behind us. "We need to keep moving," I mutter, my hand tightening on the hilt of my blade as I try to steady myself in the darkness.
But even as I speak the words, a sense of dread washes over me. In the pitch black of the collapsing tunnel, everything feels different - the walls, the floor, the air. And with each passing moment, the chances of us finding our way out grow slimmer and slimmer.
"Varikka," I say, my voice trembling slightly. "I don't know if we're going to make it. This place is coming down around us faster than a house of cards in a hurricane."
Varikka lets out a low chuckle, but there's no humor in it. "We'll make it," she says firmly, squeezing my hand. "We have to. We've come too far to turn back now."
I nod grimly, my mind racing as I try to think of a way out of this nightmare. The sound of the Guardian's footsteps grows louder behind us, and I can hear the rubble shifting and falling in the darkness.
"Merrin," Varikka says, her voice low and urgent. "We need to find a way back to the main foyer. It's our best chance of finding an exit that isn't blocked by rubble or collapsed walls."
I swallow hard, my heart pounding in my chest as I try to remember the layout of the tower from our earlier explorations. "I know," I say firmly, my voice filled with determination. "But how? Everything looks the same in this damn darkness. And with my ankle the way it is, I can't even trust my own two feet."
Varikka nods grimly, her hand tightening on the hilt of her blade as she tries to maintain her balance in the shifting passageway. "We need to find a landmark," she says firmly. "Something we can use to orient ourselves in this mess. A statue, a painting, anything that sticks out."
I nod, my mind racing as I try to remember any distinctive features of the tower's interior. "The fountain," I say suddenly, a glimmer of hope in my voice. "The one with the mermaids and the whales. It was in the main foyer, near the entrance. If we can find that, we might be able to navigate our way out."
Varikka nods, a look of relief washing over her face. "Good thinking," she says, her voice filled with gratitude. "Let's keep moving. And watch your step, Merrin. We can't afford to slip up now."
I let out a low growl of frustration as I try to maintain my balance in the darkness, my injured ankle throbbing with each step. The ground beneath our feet shifts again, sending a tremor through the passageway and causing a section of the wall to collapse behind us.
"Damn it," I mutter under my breath, my hand tightening on the hilt of my blade as I try to steady myself. "This is a nightmare. We're going to be buried alive if we don't find a way out soon."
But even as I say the words, a sense of determination washes over me. We've come too far to turn back now - and I'm not about to let this crumbling ruin beat us.
"Merrin," I say, my voice low and urgent. "We need to keep moving. That Guardian is still hot on our heels, and this place is coming down around us faster than a landslide."
I can hear Merrin's labored breathing as she struggles to keep up, her own injuries clearly taking their toll. "I know," she pants, her words barely audible over the rumbling of the collapsing ruins. "But how? Everything looks the same in this damn darkness. And with my ankle the way it is, I can't even trust my own two feet."

I nod, a sense of grim determination washing over me as I tighten my grip on my blade. "Alright then," I say, my voice low and steady. "Let's find that fountain. And if we see any sign of that damn Guardian, we run like hell."
