The ground rumbled with ominous frequency, each tremor sending fresh cracks spiderwebbing across the already unstable floor. Merrin grit her teeth, fighting for balance as dust rained down from above like fine ash. In the sudden darkness, she could still feel Varikka's hand in hers—warm and solid despite the dwarf woman's labored breathing. "Varrika!" Merrin called out, her voice echoing off the crumbling walls. "Are you alright? The ground—" Another violent shake cut her off mid-sentence, and she stumbled forward, yanking Varikka with her. The dwarf woman let out a grunt of pain but didn't cry out, even as Merrin's momentum sent them both crashing to the floor. Merrin found herself sprawled on top of Varikka, her face inches from the dwarf woman's scarred features in the gloom.

Varrika lay flat on her back, pinned beneath Merrin's lighter frame, her injured ankle screaming in protest. "Get off me, you clumsy fool," she growled, but there was no real heat in it. Her gaze flicked up to meet Merrin's, and for a moment, something passed between them—a shared understanding of the precariousness of their situation, mixed with something else. Varikka shifted slightly, her good hand coming up to grip Merrin's shoulder. "We need to move before this whole place comes down on us," she said, her voice low and urgent.

Merrin nodded, pushing herself up off the floor with Varrika's help. The ground beneath them rumbled again, a fresh cascade of debris raining down from above. They both ducked instinctively, shielding their heads with their arms. When the shower subsided, Merrin met Varikka's gaze once more. "Together?" she asked softly.

Varrika nodded, her jaw set in determination despite the pain evident in her eyes. "Together," she agreed, and together they stumbled forward into the darkness, their hands still linked, their hearts pounding with fear but their resolve unbroken.
