Phase: escalating

The ground beneath them gave way with a sickening crack, sending Varikka tumbling down the steep slope. Merrin lunged forward, her rogue's instincts driving her to act even as the unstable footing threatened to send her following after. The dwarf woman sprawled at the bottom of the incline, her face twisted in pain.
"Varikka!" Merrin cried out, her voice echoing off the crumbling walls. She scrambled down after her companion, her hands and feet finding precarious holds in the shifting rubble. "Are you alright? Can you move?" The ground shook again, a low rumble that seemed to come from deep within the earth itself.
Varrika lay sprawled at the bottom of the slope, her face set in a grimace of pain. Her injured ankle throbbed with each movement, a sharp reminder of their precarious situation. "I'm... I'm okay," she managed, though her voice was tight with agony. "But this place is coming down around our ears. We need to find solid ground before the whole damn thing collapses."
Merrin reached out a hand to help Varikka up, her eyes scanning the darkness ahead. The passageway opened into a larger chamber, the walls lined with ancient carvings and rusted metal structures that spoke of a forgotten age. But the floor was uneven and treacherous, covered in rubble and scattered debris.
"Wait," Merrin said suddenly, her hand freezing mid-reach. "Do you hear that?" A low groaning sound echoed through the chamber, like the creaking of ancient timbers under immense strain. Then came a louder crack, closer this time, as a section of the ceiling above them began to crumble.
They had seconds before the debris rained down on them. Merrin yanked Varikka upright with all her strength, ignoring the dwarf woman's pained cry. "Move!" she shouted, half-dragging her companion toward the far side of the chamber. The ground shook violently as they ran, the sound of collapsing stone filling their ears.
They reached the opposite wall just as the ceiling gave way completely. A cascade of rubble and dust poured down around them, but a heavy stone beam crashed to the floor mere feet away, blocking the path back the way they'd come. Merrin and Varrika stood panting in the sudden silence that followed, their hearts pounding in their chests.
"Well," Varrika said finally, her voice dry despite the pain still evident in her features, "at least we won't have to worry about The Guardian following us here." She attempted a wry smile, but Merrin could see the fear lurking in her companion's eyes. They were trapped, injured, and deep within enemy territory. And now they had no way back out.
