Round 726 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

As Merrin tosses the rope down into the pit, it swings precariously near Varikka's outstretched hand. Varikka's eyes lock onto the rope, and she manages to grasp it, her grip faltering as she winces in pain from her injured leg. Merrin holds her breath as Varikka starts to pull herself up, her movements slow and labored. Suddenly, a loud groan echoes through the chamber, and the ground gives way beneath Merrin's feet. She stumbles forward, her heavy mace clutched in one hand, as the floor begins to slide away beneath her. The rope holding onto Varikka slips, threatening to send her tumbling back down into the pit. With a surge of adrenaline, Merrin scrambles to regain her balance, her eyes fixed on Varikka's precarious perch above her. She must act quickly to prevent Varikka from falling back down into the pit, but the crumbling floor makes every step a treacherous one.
I scramble to regain my balance as the ground shifts beneath my feet, my heart pounding in my chest. I can see Varikka clinging desperately to the rope above me, her injured leg dangling precariously over the edge of the pit.
"Hold on, Varikka!" I call out, my voice echoing off the stone walls. "I've got you!"
I take a deep breath and steady myself, then start to pull on the rope with all my might. My muscles scream in protest as I haul Varikka up inch by painstaking inch, the weight of her body threatening to pull me down into the pit alongside her.
Just as I think I can't hold on any longer, Varikka's hand appears at the edge of the pit, grasping for purchase. With a final surge of strength, I reach out and grab her arm, pulling with all my might until she tumbles out of the pit and onto the crumbling floor beside me.
We both lie there panting for a moment, our hearts racing as we catch our breath. But we don't have time to rest - the ground is still shifting beneath us, and the Guardian's roar grows louder with each passing second.
"Can you stand?" I ask Varikka, my voice hoarse from exertion. "We need to move, now."
Varikka nods, wincing as she tries to push herself up off the ground. I grab her arm and help her to her feet, steadying her as she sways unsteadily on her injured leg.
"Lean on me," I tell her, wrapping an arm around her waist to support her weight. "We've got to find a way out of here before this whole place comes crashing down on top of us."
Together, we start to pick our way through the rubble, our eyes scanning the darkness for any sign of an exit. The ground trembles and groans beneath our feet, threatening to give way at any moment, but we press on, driven by sheer determination and the desperate need to survive.
As we move deeper into the chamber, I can feel the heat of the Guardian's presence closing in behind us, its roar echoing off the stone walls like the cry of a ravenous beast. We're running out of time - but I refuse to let Varikka down after everything we've been through together.
I take a deep breath and steel myself for what's to come, my hand tightening on the hilt of my heavy mace. "Stay close," I whisper to Varikka, "and whatever you do... don't look back."
With that, I lead the way forward into the darkness, praying to whatever gods might be listening that we'll find a way out before it's too late.
I nod, wincing as I try to push myself up off the ground. My injured leg throbs with pain, but I know we can't afford to stay here any longer. I take Merrin's arm and lean on her for support as we start to pick our way through the rubble.
"Thanks for the save," I mutter, my voice strained. "But we need to keep moving. This place is coming down around our ears."
I glance back over my shoulder, my eyes narrowing as I catch a glimpse of the Guardian's towering form in the distance. It's still some way off, but it's closing fast - and with each passing second, the ground beneath our feet grows more treacherous.
"Which way?" I ask Merrin, my voice urgent. "Is there any other exit we can use?"
Merrin shakes her head, her eyes scanning the chamber ahead of us. "I don't know," she says, her voice tight with tension. "But we can't go back the way we came - that bridge is gone now. We'll have to find another way out."
I nod grimly, my hand tightening on the hilt of my heavy mace. I can feel the weight of it in my hand, solid and reassuring - a reminder that I still have a weapon at my disposal, even if everything else seems to be falling apart around us.
"Stay low," I tell Merrin, my voice a low growl. "And keep your eyes peeled for anything that might help us out of here. If we can just make it to the next room, maybe we'll have a better chance of finding an exit."
With that, I start to move forward, my injured leg dragging behind me as I half-walk, half-crawl through the debris. The Guardian's roar grows louder with each passing second, its presence a looming threat behind us - but I refuse to let it slow us down. We're running out of time, and we can't afford to waste a single moment if we want to survive this.
As we move deeper into the chamber, I catch a glimpse of something glinting in the darkness ahead of us. I squint, trying to make out what it is - and then I see it: a door, half-buried beneath the rubble but still intact. My heart leaps in my chest as I point it out to Merrin.
"There!" I hiss, my voice barely a whisper. "A way out!"
Together, we start to make our way towards the door, our hearts pounding in our chests as we navigate the treacherous terrain. The ground shifts and groans beneath our feet, threatening to give way at any moment - but we press on, driven by sheer determination and the desperate need to survive.
As we reach the door, I can see that it's made of solid stone, its surface covered in intricate carvings that seem to shift and change as I look at them. I reach out with a trembling hand, my fingers brushing against the cool stone - and suddenly, I feel a surge of power coursing through my veins, as if the very air around me is alive with magic.
With a grunt of effort, I push against the door, feeling it give way beneath my touch. Merrin grabs hold of the other side, and together we heave it open, the ancient hinges screaming in protest as they finally yield to our combined strength.
As the door swings open, I see that it leads into a small, circular chamber beyond - and in the center of the room, there's a small pool of water, its surface shimmering with an otherworldly light.
I turn to Merrin, my eyes wide with shock. "What is this place?" I whisper, my voice barely audible over the sound of the Guardian's approaching roar.
