Phase: escalating

The chamber groaned like a living thing in its death throes. Merrin stumbled forward as the ground beneath her gave way, her hands instinctively reaching out to grab anything solid. The rope she'd thrown down into the pit had found Varrika's grasp, but the dwarf woman was moving with agonizing slowness, her face contorted in pain as she pulled herself up inch by inch.
"Hold on!" Merrin shouted, her voice echoing off the crumbling stone walls. "I've got you!" She dropped her mace and grabbed the rope with both hands, planting her feet wide for leverage. The coarse hemp fibers bit into her palms as she began to haul Varrika up from below.
The dwarf's weight was considerable, even more so when every muscle in Merrin's compact frame strained against the pull of gravity. Her arms trembled with the effort, but she gritted her teeth and kept hauling, determined not to let go.
Varikka's face appeared above the pit's edge, streaked with grime and sweat, her eyes squeezed shut against the pain. She was nearly there when a fresh cascade of stone and rubble came crashing down just inches from Merrin's head. The impact sent a shower of dust and debris into the air, momentarily obscuring her vision.
Coughing violently, Merrin shook her head to clear it, never once releasing her grip on the rope. When she could see again, Varrika was sprawled on the ground beside her, panting heavily but alive.
"Thanks," the dwarf woman gasped, her voice rough with pain and exertion. "Thought I was a goner down there." She tried to sit up but winced as her injured ankle protested the movement.
Merrin quickly retrieved her mace, scanning the chamber for any sign of further collapse. The ceiling above them continued to groan ominously, and more dust rained down from overhead. They needed to move, and fast.
"We need to keep going," Merrin said, offering Varrika a hand up. "This whole place is coming down around our ears." She helped the dwarf woman to her feet, supporting some of her weight as they began to pick their way through the rubble.
As they moved deeper into the chamber, Merrin's eyes widened in horror. The Guardian stood at the far end of the room, its massive form barely visible through the swirling dust and debris. It hadn't pursued them directly yet, but she knew that wouldn't last long.
"We've got company," Merrin hissed, nudging Varrika and nodding towards the towering figure. "And we need to find a way out of here before this whole place collapses completely."
Varikka's eyes narrowed as she spotted the Guardian. "Damn thing just won't quit, will it?" She shifted her weight, trying to distribute the pain in her ankle more evenly. "Fine. Let's keep moving and figure out how to deal with that... thing."
