The ancient stone chamber groaned like a living thing in its death throes, dust raining down from the crumbling ceiling like grey snowflakes. Merrin tracked the creature's movement with her crossbow, knuckles white on the grip, while supporting Varrika's weight with one shoulder. The dwarf woman's injured ankle screamed agony with each shift in position, but she gritted teeth and raised her mace against the next shadowy duplicate that lunged from the darkness. "Varikka!" Merrin hissed urgently. "We need to move - now! This whole place is coming down." The sound of grinding stone filled their ears as another section of wall behind them collapsed inward, sending a cascade of rubble spilling across the already unstable floor. Varrika stumbled back, her good foot finding purchase on solid ground just in time to avoid being crushed beneath the falling debris.

"We've got maybe minutes before this whole damn tower collapses!" Merrin shouted over the din of cracking stone. She scanned the chamber desperately for an exit route, any way out that didn't involve navigating through unstable terrain in darkness - but every passage seemed blocked by rubble or teetering precariously overhead. The ground beneath their feet trembled ominously once more as the Guardian's laughter echoed through the room, its voice dripping with malice. Varikka shifted her weight, trying to find a stable position despite her throbbing ankle, and felt something shift dangerously underfoot.

"Merrin!" she called out, voice tight with pain and urgency. "The floor here feels wrong - it's moving!" The halfling woman was already moving, crossbow trained on the ceiling above them as more dust rained down. "Get back against that wall," she ordered, voice grim. "We need solid ground behind us if this thing collapses completely." Varrika limped to comply, pressing her broad back against the cool stone and wishing desperately for a healing potion or even a decent bandage.

As they braced themselves for the inevitable collapse, Merrin's sharp eyes caught something glinting in the fading torchlight - the Leather-bound book had fallen open during their struggle, pages catching what little light remained. She moved closer, peering at the exposed text with growing excitement despite the precarious situation. "Varikka," she said slowly, "I think this might be important." The dwarf woman leaned forward, squinting at the cryptic passage now visible in the dim light: "When darkness surrounds, seek light in the shadows."

"What does that even mean?" Varrika growled, shifting her weight again and wincing as pain shot up her leg. But Merrin was already scanning the chamber walls more closely, eyes narrowed in concentration. And then she saw it - a faint glow emanating from behind what looked like a particularly large stalactite hanging from the ceiling. "There!" she exclaimed, pointing. "I think that's our light source!"

Varrika followed Merrin's gesture, spotting the faint luminescence. But as they both stared at it, the ground beneath them gave another ominous groan. A section of the already unstable floor began to crumble away, leaving a gaping hole where solid stone had been mere seconds before. Merrin grabbed Varikka's arm, yanking her back just in time to avoid falling into the darkness below.

"Shit," the dwarf woman breathed, staring at the new chasm opening up between them and their potential exit route. "Now what?"
