The chamber's ancient stone groaned ominously, crumbling dust raining down like grey snow as the Guardian's laughter echoed through the flickering torchlight. Merrin tracked the creature's movement with her crossbow, knuckles white on the grip, while supporting Varrika's weight with one shoulder. The dwarf woman's injured ankle screamed agony with each shift in position, but she gritted teeth and raised her mace against the next shadowy duplicate that lunged from the darkness.

"Varikka!" Merrin hissed urgently. "We need to move - now! This whole place is coming down." The sound of grinding stone filled their ears as another section of wall behind them collapsed inward, sending a cascade of rubble spilling across the already unstable floor. Varrika stumbled back, her good foot finding purchase on solid ground just in time to avoid being crushed beneath the falling debris.

"We've got maybe minutes before this whole damn tower collapses!" Merrin shouted over the din of cracking stone. She scanned the chamber desperately for an exit route, any way out that didn't involve navigating through the Guardian's shadowy minions or across increasingly unstable terrain. The flickering torchlight revealed only more darkness and looming stonework on every side.

Varrika met her gaze, face set in a grim mask of pain and determination. "Then we fight our way out!" she snarled, raising her mace once more. "I'd rather die swinging than be buried alive in this hellhole!" The dwarf warrior lunged forward to meet the next shadowy attacker, her injured ankle screaming protest but holding firm through sheer will alone. Merrin followed close behind, crossbow aimed steady at the Guardian's shifting form as they began their desperate push toward what they hoped was an exit - before the ancient stone gave way completely and buried them all beneath tons of rubble.

The air grew thick with dust and the scent of impending collapse as the two women fought their way across the crumbling chamber, each step a gamble against falling debris and shadowy ambush. Merrin's crossbow bolts found purchase in two duplicates before she had to abandon the weapon entirely to catch Varrika as her friend's ankle finally gave out completely under the strain.

"Come on!" Merrin grunted, half-dragging the dwarf woman now. "Almost there - I see an archway!" She pointed toward a dark opening in the far wall, hopefully leading to more stable passages beyond. The ground beneath them heaved and shifted as they stumbled forward, the sound of collapsing stone growing ever louder behind them.

Varrika gritted her teeth against the pain, using Merrin's shoulder for support as she forced herself to keep moving. "I'm... not holding you back!" she gasped between labored breaths. The mace dangled uselessly in her other hand now, too heavy to lift. "Just... get us out of here!"

Merrin nodded grimly, redoubling her efforts as they reached the archway's entrance. She half-pushed, half-dragged Varrika through the opening just as a massive section of the chamber behind them collapsed with an earth-shaking roar. Dust and debris filled the air as the ancient stone gave way completely, sealing off their former position in a thunderous cascade of rubble.

They stumbled forward into darkness beyond the archway, collapsing against each other in relief as the sound of destruction faded behind them. Merrin's crossbow lay abandoned on the chamber floor, lost to the collapse that had nearly claimed them both. But they were alive - barely - and that was what mattered most right now.

Varrika sagged against her friend's shoulder, breathing hard as she tried to ignore the agony in her ankle. "Well," she managed after a moment, voice rough with pain and exertion, "at least we're not buried alive." Merrin let out a shaky laugh, shifting to lean against the stone wall beside them. "Small victories," she agreed, already scanning the darkness ahead for whatever new dangers this unstable tower might hold in store for them next.
