Phase: escalating

The ground beneath them gave way with a groan of shifting stone, and Merrin found herself falling once more into the embrace of darkness. She hit the bottom hard, the impact driving the air from her lungs in a painful whoosh. A moment later, Varrika landed beside her with a grunt of pain, the dwarf's bulk cushioning some of the fall but clearly not all.
Merrin pushed herself up shakily, her head spinning as she tried to make sense of their surroundings. The familiar stench of noxious gas filled her nostrils, and she could feel the telltale signs of exposure beginning to creep in - a dull ache behind her eyes, a slight dizziness that made the world tilt just slightly off-kilter. She blinked rapidly, trying to clear her vision as she took in their predicament.
They'd landed in what appeared to be another chamber, though one significantly different from the last. The walls here were slick with moisture and covered in strange, glowing symbols that pulsed with an eerie light. Water lapped at their feet, rising slowly but steadily around them - a clear sign that they'd found yet another flooded area.
"Varrika," Merrin gasped, her voice coming out rougher than she intended. "Are you okay?" The dwarf was already pushing herself up, though her face was contorted in pain and her movements stiff and awkward. She cradled one arm against her body, and when she moved it, Merrin caught a glimpse of blood staining the sleeve.
"Fine," Varrika grunted, though her voice betrayed the lie. "Just peachy." She tried to stand but immediately hissed in pain, collapsing back down to one knee. Merrin's eyes widened as she realized the extent of the damage - the dwarf's ankle was swollen to twice its normal size, already bruising an angry purple and black.
"Oh no," Merrin breathed, her stomach dropping. "Varrika, your ankle!" The dwarf looked up at her, a flicker of something like fear passing through her eyes before it was quickly masked by determination. "It's just a sprain," she said firmly, though her voice wavered slightly. "I've had worse."
But Merrin knew better. She'd seen injuries like this before - and she knew how debilitating they could be in the field. A sprained ankle wasn't something to shrug off lightly, especially not when they were already trapped in a series of collapsing tunnels with no clear escape route.
"Right," Merrin said, forcing a smile that felt brittle on her face. "Of course it is." She moved closer to Varrika, offering a hand to help the dwarf up. As she did, she glanced around the chamber again, trying to spot any potential exits or stable ground they could move towards. The rising water was already lapping at their knees now, and she could feel the familiar panic beginning to rise in her chest.
They needed to get out of here - and fast. But with Varrika barely able to walk, let alone run if necessary, Merrin wasn't sure how they were going to manage it.
