Phase: escalating

The stone ground groaned like a waking beast beneath their feet, each tremor harder than the last. Merrin's grip on Varrika tightened instinctively as another shock ran through the floor—this one solid enough to make her teeth rattle. They were running now, driven by the primal need to escape the collapsing structure even as rational thought screamed that there was nowhere safe in this damn place. "Where are we running to?" Merrin gasped, her voice barely heard over the roar of falling stone. Varrika's jaw remained set, a grim line against the pain that lanced through her with every step. Her good hand tightened around the haft of her mace, seeking comfort in its familiar weight even as she knew it offered little defense against the very structure trying to consume them. "We keep moving," she growled back, her voice rough with effort and something deeper—fear perhaps, or maybe just the certainty that stopping meant death.
The wall! Merrin suddenly cried out, pointing ahead where a section of stone had partially collapsed, creating a narrow gap barely wide enough for a halfling to squeeze through, let alone a dwarf. Varikka didn't hesitate. She pushed forward, using her mace like a crutch to propel herself toward the opening even as Merrin scrambled ahead to widen it further with desperate kicks and pulls. The stone ground shifted beneath them ominously as they worked, dust and small rocks cascading down around them.
They made it through just as the floor behind them gave way completely, the sound of rushing water filling the air where solid stone had been moments before. Merrin grabbed Varrika's good arm and yanked her through the gap with all her strength, both women tumbling out into a new chamber just as the roar of flooding water began behind them. They lay there panting for a moment, covered in dust and grit, the sound of their own labored breathing mingling with the distant rush of water.
Varrika sat up slowly, cradling her sprained ankle which had flared painfully during their escape. "That was... close," she managed, her voice tight with pain and lingering adrenaline. Merrin nodded, still sprawled on the stone floor beside her. "Too close," she agreed, then added with a grim smile, "At least we're not drowning this time."
