Phase: escalating

The sound of grinding stone filled the air again, louder this time. Merrin pressed herself against the wall instinctively as another tremor shook the room, her eyes darting around to assess the shifting danger. Varrika stumbled, her injured ankle buckling under her weight, but she caught herself with a grimace of pain. The floor near them simply... gave way.
Dust billowed up in a choking cloud as the stone collapsed inward, revealing swirling darkness below. The thunderous roar of falling rock drowned out all other sound for several seconds. Merrin grabbed Varrika's arm, yanking her back just as more debris cascaded down where they'd been standing moments before.
"Move!" Varrika barked, already shifting her weight despite the agony in her ankle. They scrambled back across the groaning floor, dodging falling stones and seeking any stable ground amidst the collapsing chamber.
Merrin's eyes locked onto a narrow passage across the room, angling upward. "There!" she shouted over the chaos. "If we can make it through that gap..." She started moving towards it, still supporting Varrika's weight.
The dwarf warrior followed, her movements slower and more careful due to her injury. The ground shifted again as they moved, and a section of ceiling above them gave way with a loud crack. Merrin yanked Varrika sideways just in time to avoid being hit by the falling debris. They both stumbled, ending up on their knees amidst the rubble.
Merrin looked up at Varrika, her face streaked with dust and sweat. "You okay?" she asked, already moving to help the dwarf back to her feet.
Varrika nodded, wincing as she put weight on her injured ankle. "I'll manage. But we need to move faster if we're going to get out of here alive." She gripped her mace tighter, scanning the room for any sign of the mysterious figure they'd seen earlier.
As if in response to their words, another tremor shook the chamber. A section of floor near the passage Merrin had spotted collapsed completely, revealing a glimpse of swirling darkness below. The sound of rushing water became audible, growing louder by the second.
Merrin's eyes widened. "We need to get out of here now!" she shouted, pulling Varrika towards the remaining gap in the floor just as the rising waters began to flood into the chamber from below. They scrambled through the narrow opening, Merrin barely managing to pull Varrika clear as the water level rose with alarming speed.
They found themselves on a precarious ledge overlooking the rapidly flooding chamber below. The sound of rushing water was deafening now, and they could feel spray hitting their faces from the force of the torrent rising up from beneath. Merrin helped Varrika to a sitting position against the wall, both of them panting heavily from the exertion.
Varrika looked at Merrin, her expression showing both gratitude and concern. "You just saved my life," she said, her voice barely audible over the roar of the water below. "Again."
Merrin managed a weak smile despite her own exhaustion and the persistent ache in her head from the noxious gas exposure. "Let's just say we're even," she replied. "Now let's figure out how to get off this ledge before we drown here too."
