Phase: escalating

The tunnel air was thick with the stench of stagnant water and decaying stone. Merrin pressed herself against the wall, her mace held at shoulder height as she scanned the darkness ahead. The sound of rushing water grew louder with each passing moment, and she could feel the vibrations through the rock under her boots - a clear sign that something was very wrong nearby.
Varrika moved up beside her, her scarred face grim in the flickering torchlight. "You hear that?" she growled, her good hand gripping the mace tightly. Merrin nodded, her dark eyes wide with barely contained fear. The dwarf woman's presence was comforting, but Merrin knew they were both in far over their heads this time.
The sound of rushing water grew to a roar as they rounded a sharp bend in the tunnel. Before them stretched a vast cavern, its walls glistening with moisture and strange bioluminescent growths that cast an eerie green glow over everything. And at the center of it all...
Merrin's breath caught in her throat as she took in the sight. A massive stone ring stood upright in the middle of the chamber, easily twice their height. But it wasn't stone - it was covered in what looked like... flesh? Tentacles? Something living and pulsating with a dark, oily substance that seemed to absorb the light around it.
Varrika let out a low whistle. "By the ancestors... what is THAT?" She took a step forward, her eyes narrowing as she studied the structure. Merrin grabbed her arm, pulling her back.
"We need to get out of here," she hissed urgently. "Before whatever that thing is notices us." But even as she spoke, the ground beneath their feet began to shake violently. A deep, rumbling groan echoed through the cavern, and water began to surge up from hidden cracks in the floor around them.
Merrin yanked Varrika back as a geyser of black, foul-smelling liquid erupted mere feet away. The dwarf woman's face paled as she realized what was happening - the entire chamber was flooding, and fast.
"Move!" Merrin shouted, already sprinting for higher ground. She leapt onto a wide stone ledge just as another geyser exploded outward, spraying them both with noxious water that stank of decay and something worse - magic.
Varrika followed, her injured ankle screaming in protest but adrenaline driving her onward. She hit the ledge hard, rolling to protect her mace as Merrin pulled her up by the collar of her armor.
They lay there gasping for breath, clinging to the stone surface as the water rose with terrifying speed below them. The rumbling grew louder, and now they could hear something else - a low, guttural roar that seemed to come from everywhere at once.
Merrin looked around frantically, her eyes landing on a small opening in the ceiling above their heads. "There!" she cried out, pointing. "Up there!"
Varrika nodded grimly, already calculating the climb. It was their only chance - but could they make it before the floodwaters claimed them? Or worse, before whatever was making that monstrous sound decided to join them on the ledge?
She gripped her mace tighter, heart pounding as she prepared to defend them both from whatever horrors awaited in the depths below. This was it - their one shot at survival against an enemy they didn't even understand.
