Phase: escalating

The ledge beneath them gave way with a sickening crack, sending Merrin and Varrika tumbling backward into the rising waters below. Merrin surfaced with a gasp, water streaming from her face as she clawed at the edge of the stone platform, desperate to find purchase. Her ankle screamed in protest as she kicked upward, finally catching hold of the lip with her fingers.
"Varikka!" she shouted, twisting to look back. The dwarf woman was already scrambling up the opposite side of the crumbling passage, her face a mask of pain and determination. She'd made it onto solid ground, but Merrin could see the way she favored her left leg, how she moved with obvious agony in every motion.
The Guardian loomed over them both, its metal claws scraping against stone as it tried to follow their descent. The creature's movements were slow but relentless, and Merrin knew they didn't have much time before it found a way down into the rising waters.
"Move!" Varrika snarled, her voice barely audible over the sound of rushing water. She stumbled forward, solid and heavy, nearly bowling Merrin over as she tried to put distance between them and the pursuing monster. Merrin fought to keep her footing, muscles burning with exhaustion and adrenaline as the dwarf woman crashed into her.
They staggered backward together, Merrin wrapping an arm around Varrika's waist to support her weight. The rising water lapped at their boot-tops now, cold and insistent, filling the space between them and whatever lay beyond the crumbling passage. Varrika's ankle buckled under the strain, and she cried out in pain as Merrin caught her.
"Fuck," Merrin hissed, struggling to maintain balance as the ledge groaned beneath them like a dying beast. She could feel Varrika's arm trembling against hers, see the fear in her friend's eyes even through the grime and blood. The halfing woman wrapped an arm around Varrika's waist, supporting her weight as they both teetered on the edge of...
The water was already up to their knees now, cold and hungry. Merrin could feel it tugging at her boots, trying to pull them off balance and into its depths. She redoubled her grip on Varrika, hauling the dwarf woman closer as they both fought against the current.
"We have to move," Merrin gasped, her voice tight with urgency. "Before we're trapped here." The Guardian was still coming, its metal claws scraping against stone as it sought a way down into the rising waters. They had seconds before it found them again, and Merrin knew they couldn't afford to hesitate.
Varrika nodded, her face set in a grim mask of pain and determination. "Where?" she grunted, shifting her weight to try and ease the pressure on her injured ankle. The water was already up to their thighs now, swirling around them with increasing force.
Merrin's eyes darted around the chamber, searching for any sign of an exit - a tunnel leading upward, a hidden passage, anything that might offer escape from the rising floodwaters. But there was nothing visible in the dim light, no obvious way out except...
Her gaze landed on the far side of the chamber, where the stone had crumbled away completely to reveal a gaping hole leading down into darkness. The water was already flowing through that opening now, pouring down into whatever lay below with increasing speed.
"That," Merrin said, pointing with her free hand. "We have to get through there before we're trapped." She tightened her grip on Varrika's waist, preparing to move. "It's our only chance."
Varrika followed Merrin's gaze, her eyes widening as she saw the gaping hole and the rushing waters pouring through it. For a moment, she hesitated - the thought of diving into that darkness was terrifying, especially with her ankle screaming in protest.
But one look at the relentlessly rising water around them, at the Guardian still clawing its way down toward them, was all it took to harden her resolve. She met Merrin's eyes, saw the same desperate fear and determination reflected there, and nodded.
"Together," she grunted, shifting her weight onto her good leg. "On three."
Merrin nodded, her grip tightening as she prepared to move. The water was already up to their waists now, swirling around them with increasing force. She could feel the current tugging at her legs, trying to pull them off balance and into its depths.
"One," Varrika counted, her voice tight with pain and effort. "Two..."
Merrin took a deep breath, steeling herself for what was to come. The water was already up to their chests now, cold and hungry. She could feel it tugging at her clothes, trying to pull them under.
"Three!"
They launched themselves forward together, muscles straining as they fought against the current. The water roared in Merrin's ears as they plunged into the darkness of the gaping hole, the last thing she saw before being swallowed by the?.
