The stone passage groaned like a living thing in its death throes. Merrin clung to the wall with desperate fingers, slick rock offering little purchase against the rising waters. Varikka across from her pressed back against opposite stone, injured ankle screaming protests with each tiny movement. Water lapped at their boots now, cold and insistent—already past ankle-height on the halfling woman's smaller frame.

"Merrin," Varikka hissed through gritted teeth, voice tight with pain and fear, "the whole fucking place is coming down." Her hands found purchase on rough stone, fingers tracing carved symbols that seemed to pulse faintly in the dim light. The ground rumbled again beneath them—a deeper, more concerning vibration than mere shifting rubble.

Merrin scanned the path ahead frantically. "See that? Some kind of... opening?" She pointed to a dark gap in the wall up ahead—farther from the rising water and the rumble of collapse sounds. The passage narrowed further, ceiling lowering until she had to duck her head to avoid scraping it raw. Water now swirled around her calves.

Varikka tried to push off the wall toward the opening but hissed sharply as weight shifted onto her bad ankle. "Fuck! Shit!" She caught herself against stone again, face contorted in pain. The water was already lapping at her kneecaps.

Merrin moved first, half-crawling through the narrow gap. Her fingers found purchase on the opposite side—more of the same stone passage, but drier for now. She twisted back. "Come on! Before we're both fucking drowned!"

Varikka forced herself forward with agonizing slowness, dragging her good leg while keeping weight off the injured ankle. Water swirled around her thighs now, pulling at her movements. She managed to reach the gap, but the opening was too tight to maneuver through while supporting any weight on her bad leg.

"Merrin," she gasped, "I can't—fuck—I need help!"

The halfling woman immediately grabbed for Varikka's good arm, bracing herself against the opposite wall. "On three! One—two—" She pulled with everything she had while Varikka shoved forward with her functional leg.

They barely made it through together, collapsing onto drier stone just as a massive section of the passage behind them gave way with a thunderous roar. Water exploded outward in a churning wave that slammed into the wall where they'd been standing moments before—then kept flowing past in a torrent, carving out a new channel through the rubble.

Merrin lay panting on the stone, soaked and exhausted but alive. Varikka sprawled beside her, equally drenched and breathing hard. The sound of rushing water echoed from behind them now—a raging river where moments ago there had been only a rising puddle.

"Well," Merrin said after a moment, voice shaking with adrenaline, "at least we didn't drown?"

Varikka let out a harsh laugh that bordered on hysterical. "Brilliant! Now we're trapped in a collapsing tunnel system with no way back and a raging river chasing us from behind!" She tried to sit up but hissed in pain as her ankle protested.

Merrin scrambled to her feet, offering a hand. "Come on—we need to move before the next section collapses or that water catches up." She helped Varikka upright, supporting most of her weight while the warrior woman hopped on one foot. The passage ahead continued deeper into darkness, forking in two directions.

"Which way?" Merrin asked, already scanning for signs or clues.

Varikka gestured weakly toward the left fork. "The map... I think it showed something that direction? Some kind of chamber..." Her voice trailed off as another rumble shook the stones around them.

Merrin nodded grimly. "Then that's our way." She helped Varikka stumble forward, both women moving as fast as they could while navigating treacherous footing and the warrior's crippling injury. The sound of rushing water grew louder behind them—a constant reminder of their precarious situation.

They limped down the left passage, Merrin supporting most of Varikka's weight now. The air here felt different—damp but not actively flooding yet. Ancient carvings lined the walls, some seeming to shift and move in the flickering torchlight. A faint blue glow emanated from deeper within.

"What is this place?" Varikka muttered, looking around with wide eyes despite her pain. "It's like... the stone itself is alive."

Merrin didn't answer immediately—she was too busy scanning for threats or escape routes. The passage opened into a larger chamber ahead, filled with swirling mist and more of those unsettling blue glows. She helped Varikka to a relatively stable-looking section of wall near the entrance.

"We need to rest a moment," Merrin said, easing Varikka down carefully. "Let me look at that ankle." She knelt, gently probing the swollen joint while Varikka hissed in pain. "It's bad—definitely sprained, maybe worse. You're not putting weight on it for a while."

Varikka leaned back against the stone, breathing heavily. "Fuck. Just fucking perfect." She looked around the chamber with growing unease. "You sure this is any safer than where we just came from? Sounds like the whole place is about to come down."

Merrin stood, dusting off her hands and scanning the chamber again. "Safer than drowning, at least." Her eyes caught something near the center—a massive stone structure covered in carvings, pulsing with that same blue light. "And I think... I think this might be what we're looking for."

Varikka followed Merrin's gaze, her expression shifting from pain to curiosity despite their dire situation. "The Time-Splitting Sword? That thing?"

Merrin nodded slowly, moving closer to examine the structure. "Has to be something important, right? In the middle of a collapsing dungeon with built-in flood control?" She reached out to touch one of the carvings—it felt warm under her fingers, almost alive.

Suddenly, the ground beneath them rumbled again, harder this time. A section of ceiling high above crumbled away with a shower of stone and dust. Merrin yanked her hand back just as a chunk of rock the size of her fist impacted where she'd been standing moments before.

"FUCK!" Varikka shouted, pressing herself against the wall. "Move your ass, Merrin! The whole place is coming down!"

Merrin didn't need telling twice—she scrambled back to Varikka's side just as another section of ceiling gave way in a cascade of stone and rubble. They both ducked instinctively as debris rained down around them, one particularly large chunk thudding into the ground mere feet away.

"Great," Varikka growled, pulling Merrin closer. "Now we're trapped in a collapsing death trap with no way out!"
