The chamber's waters rose fast, black and reeking of decay and chemicals. Merrin helped Varikka through the tight opening just before it flooded completely, both women barely escaping submersion by climbing onto a precarious ledge high above the rising floodwaters. The Guardian's approach forced them to move along the unstable stone surface, each step a gamble on whether the ancient rock would hold or give way beneath their weight.

Merrin clung to the ledge, her fingers digging into rough stone as she fought against exhaustion and the persistent ache in her ankle. The noxious gas exposure made her head spin, but the real terror was the water below—rising fast, dark and hungry. She could feel it already lapping at the base of the ledge, searching for a way up.

"Varikka?" she called out, her voice cracking with fear. "Where are you?"

The dwarf woman responded from somewhere nearby, her voice strained with pain. "Over here! My ankle—fuck, Merrin, I can barely move!"

Merrin scrambled along the ledge, her crossbow held ready even though her hands trembled. The waters continued to rise, and she knew they had only minutes before the entire chamber was flooded. She had to find Varikka and get them both out of there—fast.

The sound of rushing water grew louder as Merrin approached a narrow opening in the wall. She peered inside, her heart pounding, and saw Varikka huddled against the far side, her leg twisted at an unnatural angle.

"Varikka!" Merrin cried out, dropping to her knees beside her friend. "What happened?"

"It's my ankle," Varrika gasped, her face pale with pain. "I slipped when the ground shook earlier. I think it's sprained—maybe even broken."

Merrin bit back a curse as she examined the injured leg. The skin was already bruising, and the joint was swollen to twice its normal size. This wasn't good—they needed Varikka's strength if they were going to survive this place.

"Can you move at all?" she asked, looking up at her friend's face.

Varrika shook her head, tears of pain and frustration welling in her eyes. "Not much. Every time I try to put weight on it, the pain is... unbearable."

Merrin took a deep breath, trying to push down her own rising panic. They were trapped in a flooding chamber with no visible exits, Varikka was injured and unable to move properly, and the Guardian was still out there somewhere—probably looking for them.

"We need to find another way out," she said firmly, even though her voice trembled slightly. "There has to be something—a hidden passage or a way to lower the water level."

Varikka nodded, wincing as she shifted her position slightly. "I saw some kind of mechanism on the wall near where I fell. It looked like it might control the water flow."

Merrin's heart quickened with renewed hope. If they could find and activate that mechanism, maybe they could at least slow down the flooding long enough to escape.

"Show me," she said, helping Varrika to her feet. The dwarf woman cried out in pain as she put weight on her injured leg, but Merrin supported her, half-carrying her back towards the ledge where they'd first climbed to safety.

The waters were already lapping at their ankles by the time they reached the edge of the chamber. Merrin helped Varikka sit down carefully on a narrow outcropping of stone, then turned her attention to searching for the mechanism.

She traced her fingers along the rough stone wall, her rogue's keen eyes scanning every detail. And there it was—an intricate carving hidden in the shadows, its surface worn smooth by time but still bearing faint traces of ancient symbols.

"This has to be it," she murmured, pressing her palm against the cool stone. Nothing happened at first, and for a heart-stopping moment, Merrin thought they'd been wrong. But then she felt a slight vibration beneath her hand, and the sound of grinding stone filled the air.

The waters began to recede almost immediately, draining away through hidden channels in the floor. Merrin let out a shaky breath of relief as the level dropped below their feet, revealing the slick stone surface beneath.

"Good thinking," Varrika said, her voice thick with pain but also gratitude. "We'd have been goners if that kept rising."

Merrin nodded, still scanning the chamber for any sign of the Guardian or other threats. The waters continued to drain away, revealing more of the room's secrets—including a series of narrow passages leading off in different directions.

"We need to move," she said, helping Varrika to her feet once more. "Can you walk at all?"

Varrika tested her weight on the injured leg, biting back a groan of pain. "Not well. But I can hop if I have to."

Merrin nodded, already planning their next move. They needed to find higher ground—somewhere safe from the rising waters and the Guardian's pursuit.

"Let's try that passage over there," she said, pointing to the highest point in the chamber. "If we can just get up high enough, maybe we can spot an exit or at least a place to hide."

Varrika nodded, her face set with determination despite the pain. Together, they began to make their way across the slick stone floor towards the narrow opening in the wall above.

The climb was treacherous—handholds crumbled beneath their fingers, and more than once Merrin had to support Varikka's weight as she struggled with her injured leg. But finally, they reached the top, collapsing onto a narrow ledge that overlooked the now-drained chamber below.

Merrin caught her breath, scanning their surroundings carefully. The ledge extended out into a wider passage beyond, leading deeper into the tower's depths. She could hear the distant sound of rushing water somewhere nearby—probably more of the tower's complex plumbing system.

"We made it," Varrika panted beside her, her face pale with exhaustion and pain. "Now what?"

Merrin chewed her lower lip thoughtfully, weighing their options. They needed to find a safe place to rest and tend to Varikka's injury, but they also couldn't afford to stay in one spot too long—who knew when the Guardian might find its way up here?

"Let's follow this passage," she decided finally. "We need to put some distance between ourselves and that chamber, and we might find somewhere more... hospitable."

Varrika nodded, wincing as she shifted her position. "Lead the way. I'll keep up—somehow."

Merrin offered her friend a reassuring smile before turning to navigate the narrow passage ahead. As they moved deeper into the tower's heart, she couldn't help but wonder what other dangers might lie waiting in the shadows.

But for now, at least, they were alive—and that was something worth fighting for.
