Round 439

Phase: escalating

Merrin forced herself upright again, this time managing to stay standing through sheer willpower. The water lapped at her waist now, cold and insistent, and she could feel the current tugging at her legs. Varrika clung to the ledge beside her, face pale in the flickering torchlight, her jaw clenched against the pain from her sprained ankle. The dwarf shifted her weight gingerly, testing her footing on the slick stone.
"I'm trying," Varrika said through gritted teeth. "But this thing isn't going to hold my weight for long." Merrin scanned the area quickly, her rogue's instincts screaming at her to find a way out before they both drowned or the whole damn place came down around their ears. The ledge wound along the edge of the main chamber, disappearing into darkness ahead and behind them. Torches flickered weakly in the distance, barely illuminating the scene of disaster.
"By the Goddess's mercy," Merrin breathed, clutching Varrika's shoulder for support. "We need to keep moving." The water was already up to their waists now, and she could feel the current growing stronger as more water poured into the chamber from somewhere unseen. They had maybe minutes before they were completely submerged.
Varrika's eyes widened with renewed terror. "Move? Merrin, I can barely stand!" She gestured helplessly at her ankle, which was already starting to swell visibly. "And look at that thing!" The massive stone Guardian stood in the now-shallow water on the far side of the chamber, its fists raised menacingly as it watched them with unblinking stone eyes.
Merrin followed Varrika's gaze and felt a fresh wave of fear wash over her. The Guardian had been following them, slowly but inexorably, since they'd first encountered it in this cursed tower. Now it stood between them and the only visible exit - a narrow tunnel that led deeper into the complex. And with the rising waters cutting off their escape route along the ledge, they were trapped.
"We have to," Merrin insisted, her voice tight with urgency. "We can't stay here. The water's already up to our waists, and I don't think this chamber is designed to hold it all." She gestured at the cracks spreading through the stone walls, the groans of stressed rock echoing ominously around them. "If this place collapses, we'll be buried alive. And even if it doesn't, we'll drown."
Varrika's face twisted with anguish as she looked down at her injured ankle. "But how? I can barely put weight on this thing without screaming. How am I supposed to... to climb or fight or whatever we need to do?" She gestured helplessly at the precarious ledge stretching out into darkness ahead of them.
Merrin bit her lip, weighing their options rapidly. The water was rising fast - too fast for comfort. They needed to move, and they needed to do it now. But with Varrika barely able to walk on solid ground, how were they supposed to navigate treacherous tunnels while evading whatever other horrors this place held?
"We'll figure it out as we go," Merrin said finally, her voice firm despite the fear churning in her gut. "We have to. I'm not leaving you here to drown, and I sure as hells aren't dying alone in this watery grave." She met Varrika's eyes, holding her gaze steady despite the terror threatening to overwhelm her.
Varrika stared back for a long moment, then nodded slowly. "Alright," she said, her voice barely audible over the sound of rushing water and groaning stone. "Alright. What do we do first?"
Merrin glanced around one more time, taking in their surroundings with rogue-trained eyes. The ledge ahead seemed to offer some hope - it climbed upward for a ways before disappearing into darkness, but at least it was higher than the rising water level. Behind them lay only the collapsed section they'd barely escaped from and the looming Guardian blocking their original exit.
"We head that way," Merrin said, pointing toward the ascending ledge. "It's our best shot at staying above water long enough to find another way out." She reached for Varrika's good arm, offering support. "Lean on me if you need to. We're getting out of here together."
Varrika hesitated for just a moment before grasping Merrin's offered arm, her grip tight with pain and fear. Together, they began to move forward along the precarious ledge, the water swirling around their legs as they left the relative safety of the main chamber behind. The torchlight flickered ominously ahead, casting long shadows that seemed to writhe and twist in the darkness.
As they moved, Merrin couldn't shake the feeling that something was watching them from the depths below - something large and hungry that had already claimed countless victims in this cursed tower. But for now, all that mattered was putting one foot in front of the other and staying above water long enough to find a way out.
