The water was already lapping at their boots when Merrin finally managed to yank Varrika through the narrow gap in the crumbling wall. They tumbled out onto a precarious ledge barely wide enough for both of them, stone dust still settling around them as the passage behind collapsed with a roar.

Merrin scrambled to her feet, pulling Varrika up beside her and immediately scanning their surroundings. The ledge stretched out ahead of them, winding along the edge of what had once been the main chamber but was now a rapidly flooding cavern. Torches flickered weakly in the distance, barely illuminating the scene of disaster.

"By the Goddess's mercy," Merrin breathed, clutching Varrika's shoulder for balance as another section of wall gave way somewhere nearby. The sound of rushing water grew louder, and she could feel the vibrations through her boots. "We need to move. Now."

Varrika nodded, but her face was pale in the dim light, her jaw clenched against the pain from her sprained ankle. She shifted her weight gingerly, testing her footing on the slick stone. "I'm trying," she said through gritted teeth. "But every step feels like agony."

Merrin knew they couldn't stay put - the rising waters would have them submerged within minutes if they didn't find higher ground. But with Varrika barely able to walk, let alone fight off whatever other horrors this cursed tower might hold, their options were limited.

"We need to get up," Merrin said finally, her eyes fixed on a crumbling staircase that seemed to lead upward into the shadows. "If we can climb, maybe we can shake off whatever's following us or at least find somewhere safer." She met Varrika's gaze, seeing the fear and determination warring in her friend's eyes. "It won't be easy, but it might be our best shot."

Varrika took a deep breath, steeling herself. "Alright," she said, her voice barely more than a whisper. "Lead the way."
