Phase: escalating

The ground beneath them lurches violently as Merrin finishes bandaging Varrika's ankle, the sound of rushing water growing louder still. The air fills with the acrid scent of damp earth and decay, and the ground beneath Varrika gives a faint shudder that makes her cry out in pain. The alcove they had chosen to wait in begins to flood, the water rising rapidly around them.
"Shit," Merrin hisses, her eyes scanning the narrow opening for any sign of structural instability. "We need to move." She helps Varrika to her feet, wrapping an arm around her friend's waist for support. "Can you walk?"
Varrika nods, gritting her teeth against the pain in her ankle as she takes a tentative step forward. "I can manage," she says, her voice tight with effort. "But we need to find a way out of here before this whole place comes crashing down around us." She looks up at Merrin, her eyes filled with both determination and fear.
Merrin nods in agreement, her mind racing as she tries to think of a plan. The narrow tunnel ahead is their only option, but it's unclear what lies beyond. "We'll have to go through the tunnel," she says reluctantly. "Stay close to me, and watch your footing." She helps Varrika forward, one careful step at a time, as the water continues to rise behind them.
As they round a corner, the tunnel opens up into a larger chamber, the walls glistening with moisture in the dim light of their torches. But something else catches Merrin's eye - a figure standing motionless in the shadows near the far wall. She freezes, her hand instinctively moving to the hilt of her mace.
"What is it?" Varrika asks, her voice barely above a whisper.
Merrin doesn't answer, her eyes fixed on the figure. It's tall and humanoid, but its features are obscured by the shadows. As they watch, it takes a step forward, revealing more detail - a suit of ornate armor that seems to be alive with shifting patterns of light.
"Guardian," Merrin breathes, her voice filled with awe and fear. "We need to get out of here. Now."
Varrika nods, her grip on Merrin's arm tightening as they prepare to move forward once more, the sound of rushing water still growing louder behind them.
