Phase: escalating

Merrin’s heart pounded in her chest as she watched Varrika struggle against the boulder, the water rising higher with each passing second. She knew they were running out of time, but she couldn’t shake the feeling that this was just another trap, designed to keep them from escaping this watery prison. I turn to Varikka, my voice shaking slightly but determined. “Varikka, we need to move,” she said, her eyes scanning the chamber for any signs of a path forward. The massive boulder suddenly gave way under Varikka’s combined strength, crashing down with a deafening roar. The impact sent shockwaves through the ground, causing Merrin to stumble backward, her eyes wide with fear.
The water level rose even higher, lapping at Varrika’s chest now, and she knew she must act quickly to avoid being swept away. As she frantically searched for an escape route, she noticed that the massive boulder had created a small chasm in the stone floor. The gap was narrow but deep enough to allow the water to flow through, offering a potential path to safety—if they could reach it in time.
Varrika let out a guttural roar of effort as she finally heaved the massive boulder aside, the stone scraping against the rocky floor with a sickening screech. Her muscles burned from the strain, but there was no time to rest. The water is rising fast, and I can feel the current tugging at my legs, threatening to sweep me off my feet, she thought desperately. As the boulder crashed down, revealing the narrow tunnel beneath, she saw Merrin pointing frantically, her voice barely audible over the din of rushing water.* “Varikka! There’s a way through!”
Merrin’s eyes lit up with hope as she realized the potential escape route. She knew they had to act fast, but her rogue instincts screamed at her that something was off about this situation. The conveniently placed boulder, the rising water—it all felt too staged to be mere coincidence. Still, they were running out of options, and the alternative was drowning.
I grab Varikka’s hand and pull her towards the gap in the floor, Merrin shouted over the roar of the water. “Come on! We can make it if we move quickly!”
Varrika nodded, her face pale with fear as she gripped her mace tightly. She followed Merrin towards the chasm, their feet slipping on the slick stone as they fought against the rising current. As they reached the edge, Merrin dropped to her stomach and reached out a hand to help Varikka descend into the relative safety of the lower tunnel.

The dwarf woman’s muscles screamed in protest as she lowered herself into the narrow passage, water already rushing past her ankles. She could feel the weight of the water above them, threatening to collapse the entire structure at any moment. But for now, they were alive—and that was what mattered most.
I drop down into the tunnel beside Varrika, my heart still racing from our narrow escape, Merrin said, scanning their surroundings for any immediate threats. “We need to move fast. This whole place could come down on us at any second.”
Varrika nodded grimly, her scarred face set with determination despite the pain shooting through her twisted ankle with each step. She knew they had to keep moving if they wanted to survive this ordeal—and more importantly, if she wanted to find a way to repay Merrin for saving her life once again.
I grab Varrika’s shoulder, steadying her as we navigate through the unstable tunnels, Merrin said, her rogue’s eyes already scanning ahead for any potential dangers. “Stay close. We’ll figure out our next move once we’re somewhere safer.”
As they pressed onward through the crumbling passageways, both women knew that their greatest challenge lay not in navigating the treacherous maze of tunnels—but in uncovering the dark secrets that lurked within its depths.
