Phase: escalating

Varikka stumbled as the ground shook violently beneath her feet, the force of the impact nearly knocking her off balance. She grabbed onto a nearby torch for support, its flickering light casting eerie shadows across the walls of the rapidly flooding chamber. The water was already up to her waist, cold and unforgiving as it lapped against her skin.
What in the abyss is happening? she thought frantically, her eyes scanning the room for any sign of an escape route or shelter from the rising tide. But all she could see was more water, more crumbling stone, and the ominous silhouette of something large moving in the darkness beyond the reach of her torchlight.
Merrin! she called out, her voice barely audible over the roar of rushing water and groaning stone. Are you alright? We need to find higher ground before this whole place comes down around us!
The halfling woman nodded, her dark eyes wide with concern as she gripped Varikka's arm tightly. Together they waded through the chest-deep water, searching for any sign of a way out of the rapidly flooding chamber. The current was strong, pulling at their legs and threatening to sweep them off their feet at any moment.
There! Merrin suddenly exclaimed, pointing towards a narrow opening in the wall near the ceiling. If we can reach that, we might be able to climb out of this death trap!
Varikka nodded grimly, adjusting her grip on her heavy mace as she followed Merrin's lead. The water was up to their necks now, making it difficult to even keep their heads above the surface. They swam with desperate determination, fighting against the current and the rising water level.
As they reached the opening, Varikka heaved herself up onto a ledge, then turned to help Merrin climb out as well. The halfling woman scrambled up beside her, both of them gasping for breath as they collapsed onto solid ground at last.
That was too close, Varikka panted, wiping water from her eyes and surveying their surroundings. They had managed to escape the immediate danger of the flooding chamber, but now found themselves in an even more precarious situation - a narrow stone passage that seemed to stretch deeper into the mountain's heart, with the sound of rushing water echoing ominously from below.
Well, Merrin said with a nervous laugh, at least we're not drowning anymore. Now we just have to worry about whatever else this place might throw at us.
