Merrin's mind raced as she clung to the crumbling ledge, the icy water lapping at her ankles. The sound was deafening – rushing water filling the chamber, punctuated by the ominous groans of collapsing stone. She could feel the vibrations through her hands and feet, every rumble a reminder that their precarious perch might give way at any moment.

Varikka's grip on her arm tightened, the dwarf warrior's strength the only thing keeping Merrin from dissolving into panic. Together, they'd faced countless dangers in this cursed tower – but never anything quite like this. The water was rising fast now, swirling around their feet with increasing force. Just a few more inches and it would be strong enough to sweep them off.

Merrin's eyes darted around the chamber, searching for any sign of escape. The passage behind them was completely blocked by rubble now, the way they'd come in utterly impassable. Ahead lay more darkness and uncertainty – but at least it wasn't flooding yet. Maybe there was still a chance to find higher ground, to get away from this rising tide before it pulled them under.

The thought spurred her into action. "Varikka!" she hissed, tugging at the dwarf's arm. "We need to move! Before we can't walk through it anymore." Her voice trembled slightly, betraying her fear despite her best efforts to stay calm. The last thing they needed was for their legs to go numb from cold – then they'd really be in trouble.

Varikka nodded grimly, understanding the urgency without needing words. Together, they began to inch forward along the ledge, one careful step at a time. The water swirled around their feet, tugging insistently at their boots as if trying to pull them off. Merrin gritted her teeth, focusing all her energy on maintaining her grip on the stone and moving her feet in tandem with Varikka's.

Each step felt like an eternity, each rumble of collapsing rock sending fresh waves of fear through her. But they kept moving, driven by sheer determination not to die in this watery grave. The ledge narrowed further ahead, forcing them to press closer together for balance. Merrin could feel the heat radiating from Varikka's body, a comforting presence in the chilling water.

And then – salvation. The passage opened up slightly ahead, rising above the water line. A small shelf of stone jutted out, just wide enough for both of them to stand on if they squeezed together. Merrin's heart leapt with desperate hope. If they could just reach that spot...

"Almost there!" she whispered urgently, pushing forward with renewed energy. Varikka matched her pace, and together they lunged for the dry ground. Their hands found purchase on the stone edge at almost exactly the same moment, fingers scrabbling for grip as their bodies swung out over the rushing water.

For a heart-stopping second, Merrin thought they might not make it – felt herself beginning to fall, the icy spray already hitting her face. But Varikka's iron grip held fast, muscles bulging as she hauled them both up onto solid ground with a grunt of effort. Merrin collapsed beside her, gasping for breath and trembling uncontrollably.

They lay there for a moment, panting and staring at the water below – now mere inches from where they'd just been standing. The sound was even louder up here, a roar that filled the entire chamber. Merrin felt a fresh wave of terror wash over her as she realized how close they'd come to being swept away.

But they were alive. They'd made it. And for now, that was enough. She looked at Varikka, seeing her own relief and lingering fear mirrored in the dwarf's eyes. Together, they'd faced this impossible situation – and together, they'd find a way out.
