Merrin and Varrika find themselves clinging to a narrow ledge above a rapidly rising torrent. The sound is deafening—rushing water filling the narrow stone passage with its relentless roar. Merrin's voice cuts through the din, sharp and urgent. "We need to move! The tunnel is collapsing!" She glances at Varikka, her expression grim. The stone underfoot shifts ominously.

Varrika nods, her face a mask of concentration despite obvious pain. "Aye," she grunts, shifting her weight carefully. "But where? Every path looks like it could come down any moment." The water below churns, spray misting upward in the torchlight. The air grows heavier, wetter.*

Merrin's eyes scan the crumbling walls and unstable ceiling. "There!" She points to a narrow side passage, barely visible in the gloom. "It looks like it angles upwards. If we can reach it before this whole place gives way..." Her words trail off as another rumble shakes the stone around them.

Varrika moves first, her powerful dwarf's body providing leverage as she hauls herself toward the side passage. "After me," she calls back over her shoulder. "And keep low. The higher we go, the less the water pressure will matter." Her injured hand leaves a smear of blood on the stone as she pulls herself along.*

Merrin follows, her smaller frame more easily navigating the precarious footing. "Stay close to the wall," she advises, her rogue's instincts guiding her movements. "The ceiling looks like it's about to rain rock." She ducks under a low-hanging section, feeling the stones shift above her head.

The passage narrows further as they ascend, the sound of rushing water below them growing distant. Varrika pauses at a particularly tricky section—a gap in the stone wide enough for a fall into the rising torrent below. "This is going to be fun," she mutters, before stepping across with careful precision.

Merrin watches her friend's progress, then makes the crossing herself. "Fun like a dwarf's joke," she quips, trying to lighten the mood as she joins Varrika on the safer side. "You know how those end." She grins despite the situation, grateful for the momentary levity.

Varrika manages a gruff laugh, her eyes crinkling at the corners. "Aye, and we're not even to the punchline yet," she replies, already scanning ahead for the next obstacle. "But at least we're moving upward. That's something." The passage continues to rise, offering hope despite the ongoing danger.

The stone around them groans and shifts as they press onward, the sound of collapsing tunnels a constant reminder of their precarious situation.
