Phase: escalating

The water cascaded down Merrin's body as she scrambled onto the crumbling ledge, gasping for air. Her fingers ached from clinging to the jagged edge, and every breath came with a desperate prayer. Varikka's scarred hand clamped around her arm, hauling her up with surprising strength.
"Move! Now!" The dwarf woman snarled, her face etched with urgency. "This whole damn ledge is coming down faster than we can find the mechanism!" Merrin could only nod, her teeth chattering from the cold as she tried to catch her breath. Below them, the creatures that had pursued them across the tower now paused at the edge of the ledge, their glowing eyes fixed on the newly exposed passage like predators assessing prey.
Varikka didn't hesitate. With a grunt, she yanked Merrin towards the dark opening, her boots slipping on the slick stone. The ledge groaned ominously beneath them, more debris cascading into the waters below. Merrin's ankle screamed in protest with each step, but fear drove her forward.
They stumbled into the narrow passage just as another tremor shook the tower. Behind them, the sound of collapsing stone echoed through the chamber, a sickening roar that spoke of imminent doom. The water that had nearly drowned them moments ago was already receding back into hidden drains, leaving only the cold and darkness behind.
Merrin collapsed against the wall of the new passage, her breath coming in ragged gasps. Her leg throbbed with each heartbeat, the gash on her calf bleeding steadily despite her efforts to staunch it. The cold seeped into her bones, and she knew hypothermia would set in quickly if they didn't find shelter or a heat source soon.
But Varikka was still out there, somewhere beyond that collapsing chamber. The thought drove away the pain and fear. She had to find her friend, had to ensure she was safe before the tentacled horror reached her. Merrin forced herself back to her feet, her makeshift torch held high as she stumbled deeper into the unknown passage.
The darkness swallowed her whole, leaving only the sound of her own ragged breathing and the distant echo of collapsing stone behind.
