Round 320 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

As the creature's central mass shudders violently, a large chunk of stone crashes down onto the water, sending a massive wave rippling through the chamber. The wave sweeps Merrin off her feet, and she struggles to regain her footing on the slippery floor. Varika watches in horror as her friend is sent tumbling towards the rising waters.
I feel myself being swept off my feet by the massive wave, my boots slipping on the slippery stone floor as I struggle to regain my balance. For a moment, I'm certain I'm about to be pulled under, dragged down into the rising waters by the sheer force of the current. But then I feel Varikka's hand on my arm, her grip strong and steady as she pulls me back towards her. "I've got you!" she calls out, her voice barely audible over the shrieks of the tentacled horror and the grinding of stone. "We need to move, now!"
I nod, scrambling to my feet as Varikka helps me regain my balance. The water is rising fast, and I can feel the cold seeping into my bones as it soaks through my leathers. But there's no time to think about that now. We need to get out of here before the entire chamber comes crashing down on top of us. Together, we turn and sprint towards the far wall, our boots splashing through the rising waters as we make our way across the chamber. The creature looms behind us, its tendrils lashing out wildly as it tries to block our path. But Varikka and I are too fast, dodging and weaving our way through the maze of writhing appendages as we race towards freedom. We reach the far wall just as another chunk of stone comes crashing down, sending a shower of debris flying through the air. I duck my head, shielding myself from the worst of it as Varikka reaches out and grabs hold of a small ledge, hauling herself up and over the edge with a grunt of effort. I'm right behind her, scrambling up onto the ledge just as the water rises to meet my feet. For a moment, I think we might have made it, that we might actually survive this nightmare after all. But then I hear a sickening ripping sound, and I turn to see Varikka's hand still attached to the ledge, her body falling back into the rising waters as she lets out a scream of pain and terror. "No!" I cry out, reaching down to grab hold of her arm with both hands. "Hold on, Varikka! I've got you!" But even as I say the words, I can feel my own grip slipping, the water pulling at us both like a ravenous beast intent on devouring everything in its path. I grit my teeth, digging my fingers into Varikka's arm as I try to hold onto her with all my strength. The muscles in my arms and shoulders burn with the effort, but I don't let go. I can't let go. Not when Varikka needs me most. "Merrin!" Varikka cries out, her voice strained with pain and exhaustion as she struggles to pull herself up onto the ledge. "I can't - I can't hold on much longer!"
But I don't respond, my jaw set in grim determination as I continue to pull with all my might. The water rises higher, threatening to sweep us both away at any moment, but I refuse to let it win. Not when so much is at stake. With a final, desperate heave, I manage to haul Varikka up onto the ledge beside me, her body falling against mine as we both struggle to catch our breath. For a moment, all I can do is hold her close, my arms wrapped around her trembling form as I try to steady my own racing heart. We're not out of danger yet, but for now, we've made it to higher ground. And that's all that matters.
I cling to Merrin as we both struggle for breath on the slippery ledge. My entire body aches from the cold water and the exertion of nearly being swept away. I can feel my heart pounding in my chest, my lungs burning as I try to fill them with air. But even as I fight to catch my breath, I know we can't afford to stop moving. The creature is still thrashing in the water below us, its tendrils lashing out and striking the walls in a frenzy of rage and pain. And above us, the stone ceiling groans and creaks, threatening to come crashing down at any moment. "Merrin," I gasp, my voice hoarse with exhaustion. "We need to keep moving. We can't stay here much longer."
She nods, her own breath coming in ragged pants as she struggles to her feet beside me. Together, we turn and stumble towards the far end of the ledge, our boots slipping on the wet stone as we try to find purchase. I glance down at my hand, wincing as I see the deep gashes in my palm where the creature's tendril had torn away my skin. The pain is sharp and burning, but I know it's nothing compared to what we'll face if we don't get out of here soon. As we near the end of the ledge, I can see a narrow passageway leading down into the darkness below. It looks treacherous, the stone walls slick with moisture and the sound of rushing water echoing up from somewhere deep within. But it's our only chance at escape. "Down there," I say, pointing towards the passage with a nod of my head. "It's our best bet."
Merrin follows my gaze, her eyes narrowing as she tries to peer into the shadows. "Are you sure?" she asks, her voice tinged with doubt. "We don't know what's waiting for us down there."
I shake my head, a grim smile tugging at the corner of my mouth. "No," I admit. "But we can't stay here. Not with that thing still thrashing around below us and the whole damn chamber about to come down on our heads."
She nods, her jaw setting in grim determination as she turns towards the passage. Together, we move forward, our bodies tense and ready for whatever dangers may lie ahead. I know we're taking a risk, plunging into the unknown like this. But what choice do we have? We can't go back the way we came, not with the creature still blocking our path. And we can't stay here, not with the entire chamber about to come crashing down on top of us. So we move forward, one step at a time, our hearts pounding and our breaths coming in short, sharp gasps as we try to find our way to safety in this nightmare of stone and water and madness.
