The water was already at their ankles when Merrin pulled Varikka back into the narrow stone passage, the sound of it rushing forward like a beast released from its cage. The ground beneath them shook with a low groan that seemed to come from the very bones of the earth. "Move!" Merrin hissed, shoving Varikka ahead of her as she scrambled after her friend. The water was already waist-deep in the main chamber behind them when they reached the relative safety of the winding corridor—relative being a generous term for a passage that was rapidly becoming a death trap.

Varikka's face was pale, her breath coming in short gasps as she pressed herself against the wall. "Merrin," she whispered, her voice trembling, "what are we going to do?" The halfling woman didn't answer immediately, her dark eyes scanning the corridor ahead and behind with a predator's focus. She could feel the vibrations in the stone growing stronger, hear the groans of stressed masonry echoing through the waterlogged tunnels. They were running out of time—fast.

"Forward," Merrin said finally, her voice tight but steady. "There has to be higher ground somewhere." She moved ahead, one hand trailing along the wall for balance as the water lapped at her thighs. Each step was a gamble against the slick footing and the increasing pressure of the flood behind them. The corridor twisted sharply ahead, disappearing into darkness that offered no promise of safety but held the only possibility of escape from the rising tide.

Varikka followed close behind, her breath coming in short pants as she fought to keep up with Merrin's relentless pace. The water was already over her knees now, cold and insistent against her skin. "Merrin," she gasped, grabbing for her friend's arm again, "I can't—" But the halfling woman didn't slow down, didn't look back. She knew they had to keep moving or die trying.

The passage narrowed ahead, forcing them into single file as the water continued its relentless ascent. Merrin could feel the weight of the structure above them now, the ancient stones groaning with each passing second. They were trapped in a tomb that was actively trying to bury them alive while simultaneously drowning them. It was a scenario straight out of her worst nightmares—and yet here she was, leading Varikka deeper into it.

As they rounded another bend, Merrin spotted something ahead—a faint glimmer of light in the darkness. She felt a surge of hope even as the water lapped at her chest now, cold and insistent. "There!" she called back to Varikka, pointing towards the distant glow. "Come on—higher ground must be close." The two women pushed forward with renewed desperation, their hearts pounding in unison as they fought against the rising tide that threatened to swallow them both.

They reached the source of the light—a small chamber off to one side of the corridor, its ceiling higher than the surrounding passage. Water filled it halfway, but there was space to breathe, to rest for a moment against the cold stone walls. Merrin pulled Varikka inside with her, both women collapsing against the wall as they caught their breath.

"We need to keep moving," Merrin said after a moment, her voice tight with exhaustion and fear. "Find higher ground before this whole place comes down on top of us." She looked around the chamber quickly, noting the single exit opposite their entry point—the corridor continued upward at a steep angle, offering a potential escape route if they could navigate it.

Varikka nodded, though her face was still pale with terror. "What about—what about the monster?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper. Merrin's jaw tightened at the reminder of the tentacled horror that had nearly claimed them both moments ago. She knew it was still out there somewhere—in the watery depths below or lurking in the shadows ahead. But right now, their immediate concern was survival—staying alive long enough to face whatever horrors awaited them next.

"One thing at a time," Merrin said grimly, pushing herself back to her feet. "Let's get out of this water and find somewhere solid to stand." She offered Varikka a hand up, pulling her friend close for a moment in a rare show of physical affection. "Stay with me," she murmured. "We'll get through this together."

And with that, the two women plunged back into the?.
