The water rose with terrifying speed, now lapping at Merrin's waist as she clung to the crumbling staircase edge. Each surge felt like icy fingers clawing at her legs, sapping what little warmth remained in her exhausted body. The bioluminescent markings pulsed ominously below—she could feel the creature's hunger radiating up through the water column.

The structure groaned around them, wood splintering with audible pops as the weight shifted dangerously. Merrin felt the entire staircase shudder beneath her feet, and for a horrifying moment she thought it would collapse entirely. She tightened her grip on the railing, muscles screaming in protest as she fought to maintain balance.

"Stay close," she hissed over her shoulder, voice tight with barely contained panic. "And try to keep your feet." Varikka nodded wordlessly, pressing herself against Merrin's back and trying desperately not to think about the hungry water below or the ominous creaking above. The younger woman's fingers dug into Merrin's soaked leathers as she clung tightly.

Merrin knew they were running out of time—the water was rising too fast, the structure collapsing too quickly. She needed to find higher ground, needed to get them both away from this cursed lake before it consumed them entirely. But every option seemed worse than the last: climb higher onto a crumbling ledge, dive into unknown depths, or simply surrender to the inevitable flood.

The choice was made for her when another section of the staircase gave way with a sickening crack. Merrin felt herself teetering on the edge, grip slipping as gravity pulled her inexorably towards the waiting water below.
