The water lapped at their thighs now, cold and insistent, as Merrin pulled herself along the ledge with fingers that were starting to go numb. Below, the surface of the lake churned with unseen movement—something large was still down there, something that had nearly taken Varikka just moments ago. "Merrin!" The rogue's name came out sharp and frightened behind her. "The stairs—" "I know," Merrin hissed back, not stopping her careful climb. She could feel the vibration of wood splintering beneath them, each crack sending a fresh jolt of fear through her already overtaxed nerves. She risked a glance down as she moved, one hand pressed flat against the damp stone wall for balance. The Tentacled Horror was still there in the churning water below, its bioluminescent markings pulsing with what looked almost like malevolent curiosity. And now... More movement. Something else was emerging from the depths—smaller creatures with glowing eyes that seemed to float just beneath the surface of the rising lake. Great. Just great. "Stay close," Merrin called back without turning around, her voice tight with controlled panic. She knew they had to keep moving, had to find a way up and out before the entire structure came down on top of them both. The water was already waist-deep in the main chamber now, and she could feel the current tugging at her legs as if trying to pull her back into its depths. It was getting harder to maintain her grip on the ledge with each passing second, her hands slipping slightly in the constant flow of cold liquid rushing past them. She needed something—anything—to help stabilize herself, to give them both a fighting chance against this rapidly deteriorating situation. But what? There was nothing here but stone and water and... Her eyes caught on something then, a dark shape barely visible beneath the churning surface. A moment later, she realized what it was—a partially submerged staircase leading up to what looked like another landing above them. It was their best shot, maybe their only shot at escaping this nightmare before it swallowed them whole. "Varikka," Merrin said, her voice barely audible over the groaning of the structure around them and the rush of water filling every available space. "I think I see something up ahead—another way out." She didn't wait for a response, just pushed forward along the ledge with renewed determination, ignoring the ache in her injured leg and the chill that had settled into her bones from the frigid water. They were running out of time—and options.
