The water closed over them with a malevolent hiss, swallowing Merrin's scream as she was dragged under by the school of glowing-eyed creatures. Panic surged through her veins as the world went dark and churning, her injured leg screaming in protest as she fought to keep Varikka close. The weight of her friend's body pressed against her, a reminder that they were both fighting for survival now.

Bubbles escaped her lips as she struggled to regain control, muscles burning with exertion. For one horrifying moment, she lost track of which way was up, the water pressing in from all sides. Then her head broke the surface again, and she gasped for air, lungs burning.

Varikka's face emerged beside hers, pale and wide-eyed with terror. Merrin's arm instinctively tightened around her friend as they tread water, scanning the dark depths below. The bioluminescent creatures had vanished back into the shadows, but that didn't mean they were safe. The rising water lapped at their chins now, cold and relentless.

"Stay close," Merrin hissed, her voice barely audible over the sound of rushing water. "We need to find a way out before we drown or freeze."

Her eyes darted around the chamber, searching for any sign of higher ground or a passage that might lead them away from this nightmare. The water continued to rise, now lapping at their shoulders, and she could feel the chill seeping into her bones.

"Varikka," she said urgently, "do you see anything? Any way out?"

Her friend shook her head, teeth chattering. "I... I don't know. Everything looks the same in this light."

Merrin's grip on her dagger tightened as she felt something brush against her leg beneath the water. She kicked out reflexively, heart pounding. Whatever it was, it had retreated back into the depths.

"We can't stay here," she said, making a decision. "We need to swim for that shore over there." She pointed to a narrow ledge visible through the gloom, barely above the rising waterline. "It's our best shot at staying afloat."

Varikka nodded, her face set with determination despite the fear in her eyes. Together, they began to stroke towards the distant ledge, the water closing over their heads again and again as unseen creatures darted through the depths below.

The journey felt interminable, each stroke bringing them closer to salvation while also draining what little strength remained. When at last Merrin's fingers found purchase on the stone edge, she hauled herself up with a gasp of relief, then reached down to help Varikka.

They collapsed onto the narrow shelf, panting and shivering, as the water continued to rise around them. For now, they were safe from drowning, but the cold was becoming a real threat. Merrin's teeth chattered as she surveyed their surroundings, searching for any sign of heat or shelter.

"At least we're not in the water anymore," Varikka said through chattering teeth, trying to sound brave. "What do we do now?"

Merrin's mind raced, weighing their options against the growing dangers surrounding them. The water was still rising, and she knew they couldn't stay here much longer without risking hypothermia. But every exit seemed blocked by new horrors, and the thought of facing more unknown terrors in their current state was almost unbearable.

"We need to find a way out of this place," she said finally, her voice barely above a whisper. "But first, we need to warm up." She glanced around, spotting a narrow passage leading upward. "There might be something higher up—somewhere dry and warm."

Varikka nodded, her eyes following Merrin's gaze. "Lead the way," she said, her voice steadier now. "I trust you."

Merrin felt a surge of pride at her friend's words, even as exhaustion tugged at her limbs. Together, they might just survive this ordeal after all.

"Stay close," she repeated, helping Varikka to her feet. "And whatever you do, don't let go of my hand." With that, she led the way into the darkness, their future uncertain but their determination unbroken.
