The water was alive, Merrin decided as she surfaced for the third time, gasping air into burning lungs. It wasn't just cold—it was sentient, actively trying to leech every last degree of warmth from her body through sheer, malevolent force. Her muscles cramped and seized, refusing to obey even the most desperate commands. The surface felt like shards of ice against her palms, each wave a fresh violation of her skin.

Below, the tentacled horror still held Varikka in its grip, her face barely visible beneath the churning water. Merrin's eyes darted around the rapidly flooding chamber, searching for any alternative to this nightmare scenario. The newly revealed passage offered escape—if they could reach it before drowning or being dragged under by the rising tide. But every second counted, and her frozen fingers fumbled with the dagger as she prepared to dive again.

This was madness. She should have listened to Elric's warnings about this place—should have turned back when things started going wrong instead of pushing forward out of stubborn...

The water continued to rise, now knee-deep and showing no signs of slowing. Merrin could feel the current growing stronger, pulling at her legs with insistent fingers. She glanced back at the collapsed tower entrance, calculating the distance and the rising water level. If this kept up, they'd be completely submerged within minutes—trapped in an underwater maze with god-knew-what lurking in the depths.

Her gaze returned to Varikka, still fighting the tentacled horror's grip beneath the surface. The creature's bioluminescent markings cast an eerie glow on the churning water, making it impossible to see more than a few feet down. Merrin's stomach twisted with fear for her friend. She couldn't leave Varikka to that thing's mercy—she had to find a way to help.

The dagger felt useless in her hands, too small and fragile against whatever horrors might await them in the depths. But it was all she had. With a deep breath, Merrin dove back into the freezing water, kicking hard towards where Varikka struggled beneath the surface. The cold hit her like a physical blow, stealing what little breath she'd managed to gather. Her muscles screamed in protest as she fought against the rising current, desperate to reach her friend before it was too late.

As she neared the spot where she'd last seen Varikka, Merrin's hand closed around something solid—a tentacle. She yelped involuntarily, bubbles escaping from her mouth as panic surged through her. But there was no time to hesitate. Forcing down her fear, she followed the appendage upwards until her fingers brushed against cloth—Varikka's clothing.

With a burst of adrenaline-fueled strength, Merrin grabbed hold and tugged hard, trying to pull her friend free from the creature's grip. The tentacle tightened around them both for a moment before loosening, allowing Varikka to surface alongside Merrin. They broke through the water together, gasping for air as they tread water frantically.

"Merrin! What—" Varikka began, but Merrin cut her off with a sharp gesture towards the shore.

"We need to move," she hissed urgently. "The water's rising too fast, and I don't know what else is in here." She glanced around nervously at the murky depths surrounding them. The bioluminescent creatures' markings had multiplied—she could see at least half a dozen distinct glows scattered throughout the chamber now.

Varikka nodded wordlessly, her face pale but determined. Together, they began to swim towards the nearest solid ground—a small shelf near the chamber's edge that offered some protection from the rising current. Every stroke brought them closer to safety... and every second that passed saw the water level creep higher still.

By the time they reached the shelf, the water was already waist-deep. Merrin scrambled up onto the stone surface, pulling Varikka up beside her with trembling hands. They collapsed against each other, panting heavily as they tried to catch their breath in the biting cold air above the rising floodwaters.

"What in the Abyss was that thing?" Varikka gasped between breaths, gesturing towards the churning water where the tentacled horror had disappeared.

Merrin shook her head, still shivering violently. "I don't know," she admitted, her teeth chattering. "But I have a feeling we're about to find out." She glanced around the chamber again, noting the increasing number of glowing creatures visible in the water. "And I think we've got company."

Varikka followed her gaze, her eyes widening as she took in the scene below. "By the gods," she murmured. "How are we going to get out of here?"

Merrin's mind raced, trying to process their situation and find a solution. The water was rising too fast—they needed to find higher ground or a way to stop the flood. But everything above them was unstable, the entire structure threatening to come down at any moment. And now they had unknown creatures in the water below, plus whatever had caused this flooding in the first place.

"We need to keep moving," she said finally, her voice tight with determination despite her exhaustion and fear. "Upwards—find a way out before we drown or get pulled under by whatever's down there." She met Varikka's eyes, seeing her own terror reflected back at her. "Stay close. And whatever you do, don't fall in the water again."

Varikka nodded, gripping Merrin's arm tightly. "Agreed. Let's find a way out of this cursed place before we become part of its collection."
