Phase: escalating

The cold water hit Merrin's legs with a shock that felt like needles stabbing into her flesh. She was already soaked from the lake that had swallowed Varikka whole, but this new immersion was something else entirely—cold seeped into her bones, chilling her to the core. The halfling woman waded deeper, water rising past her knees, then her thighs, each step a battle against the growing numbness in her extremities.
The creatures' eyes glowed with an unnatural intensity, pulsing like malevolent hearts beating beneath the surface. Merrin could see their forms now, long and sinuous, coiling through the murky depths like living shadows. She gritted her teeth, fighting back a shiver that had nothing to do with the cold. They were watching her, no doubt about it. Waiting.
Another tentacle broke the surface, this one closer than she would have liked. Merrin leapt back instinctively, her heart hammering in her chest. The water churned where the appendage had been, sending a wave crashing against her legs. She could feel the current tugging at her, trying to pull her under.
"Varikka!" Her voice echoed off the cavern walls, sounding thin and desperate even to her own ears. There was no response except the distant sound of water cascading somewhere deeper within the complex. The tower above continued its relentless collapse, sending fresh showers of debris into the lake around her.
Merrin knew she couldn't stay here much longer. The cold would kill her eventually if the creatures didn't first. She needed to find higher ground, a source of heat—a way out. But every direction looked like more darkness and danger. And somewhere out there, Varikka was still alive—she had to be.
The wiry halfling woman took another step into the water, now waist-deep. Her fingers tightened around the iron bar she carried, ready for anything. The creatures' eyes pulsed again, a silent promise of the horrors that awaited her below the surface. Merrin steeled herself, drawing on every ounce of courage and skill she possessed.
"Come on," she muttered to herself, more determination than bravado in her voice. "Let's see what other delights this place has in store for us."
