Phase: escalating

The halfling scout woman scrambled forward into the secret passage with desperate speed, her wiry frame allowing her to squeeze through spaces that would have been impossible for anyone larger. The heavy iron bar she'd grabbed clanged against stone as she moved, its weight dragging at her already exhausted limbs. Behind her, the sound of rushing water grew louder with each passing second—a sound that sent a fresh jolt of terror through her already overtaxed system.
The water was cold enough to steal her breath away, Merrin realized as she pulled herself deeper into the narrow passage. It felt like ice had been poured directly into her veins, and her teeth were already chattering violently despite her best efforts to control them. The heavy iron bar she'd grabbed clanged against stone as she scrambled forward on hands and knees, the weight of it dragging at her exhausted limbs.
Behind her, the sound of rushing water grew louder with each passing second—a sound that sent a fresh jolt of terror through her already overtaxed system. She didn't dare look back to see how close the tentacled horror was now, knowing full well that sight alone might shatter what little composure she had left. Instead, she focused on moving forward as quickly as possible, her small frame allowing her to squeeze into spaces that would have been impossible for anyone larger.
The passage seemed to descend slightly as she crawled deeper inside, which offered a glimmer of hope—lower ground meant the rising water might not follow quite so aggressively. But even as that thought flickered through her mind, she heard Seraphine's panicked voice echoing from somewhere behind and below her. The wizardess had clearly fallen into the water, and Merrin knew she couldn't just abandon her friend to drown.
With a curse, she reversed direction, hauling herself back down the passage with desperate speed. The cold water was already seeping in around her as she reached the junction where Seraphine lay submerged, gasping for air between coughing fits. Without hesitation, Merrin dove into the frigid liquid, wrapping her arms around her friend's torso and hauling her upwards with all her strength.
They surfaced together in a tangle of limbs, both women gasping for breath as they fought against the rising water. Seraphine clung to Merrin desperately, her body shaking with cold and terror. "Merrin! Thank the gods—" she managed between choking coughs. "What were you thinking? You could have been killed!"
"I wasn't about to let my best friend drown," Merrin growled, her teeth chattering violently as she struggled to keep them both afloat. The water was already waist-deep and rising fast, the current tugging insistently at their legs. "Now come on—we need to get out of this damn passage before we both end up as fish food!"
With Seraphine clinging to her back like a terrified kitten, Merrin began hauling them both toward the narrow opening she'd spotted earlier—a potential escape route that led upward. The water churned around them, swirling with malicious energy as it sought to drag them deeper into its depths.
They managed to reach the opening just as another massive surge of water came rushing down the passage behind them, the force of it nearly knocking them off their feet. Merrin threw herself forward through the narrow gap, dragging Seraphine with her by main force, and they both tumbled out onto a small rocky ledge above.
Merrin lay there panting for several seconds, her entire body shaking with cold and exhaustion. She could feel every muscle burning, her lungs heaving as she tried to draw air into her protesting chest. Seraphine was a dead weight on top of her, still coughing and gasping for breath, but at least they were both alive.
"Well," the wizardess finally managed between shudders, "that was...ill-advised."
Merrin let out a harsh bark of laughter that bordered on hysterical. "You're telling me? Next time you fall into a magical death-trap, feel free to just...stay there!"
Despite her words, she wrapped an arm around Seraphine's trembling shoulders and pulled her closer, sharing what little warmth they had between them. The water was still rising below, the sound of it churning and rushing filling the air like a monstrous heartbeat. They were trapped on a small ledge with no obvious escape route and no idea what other horrors might be lurking in the depths beneath them.
But for now, at least they were alive—and together. And that was more than Merrin could have hoped for when she'd dived into those icy waters to save her friend.
"Alright," she said finally, her voice barely above a whisper. "Let's see if we can find a way out of this mess before we freeze to death—or whatever else is down there decides to come looking for us."
