Round 157 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

Seraphine's grip on Merrin's arm tightens as she pulls her up and over the rickety bridge, their bodies swaying precariously in the turbulent water. The creatures close in, their bioluminescent eyes fixed on them like lanterns in the dark. The sound of rushing water grows louder still, threatening to engulf them at any moment. As Seraphine stumbles across the bridge, her robes dragging behind her, Varikka thrashes about in the darkness, her cries for help echoing through the tunnel.
My heart hammers against my ribs as Seraphine hauls me over the rickety bridge. The creatures' bioluminescent eyes bore into us, their hunger palpable in the darkness. I can barely make out Varikka thrashing in the water, her desperate cries for help echoing off the tunnel walls. Seraphine's grip on my arm is like a vice as we struggle to maintain our balance on the swaying bridge. The water churns around us, threatening to sweep us away at any moment. My robes are heavy with the icy liquid, weighing me down and sapping my strength with every step. Where is Seraphine? I think wildly as we stagger across the precarious planks. And Varikka - gods, if she's still out there...
The thought of losing another companion to this accursed place sends a fresh wave of fear through me, nearly buckling my knees beneath me. I've already lost Jeane and Halie to the pit trap - I can't bear to watch Varikka dragged under as well. But even as I strain my eyes in the gloom for any sign of the others, I know deep down that our chances of escape are slim. The tower is collapsing around us, the water rising with terrifying speed, and now these creatures...these horrors from the depths that lurk just beyond the bridge's edge. We're running out of time, I think grimly as Seraphine and I reach the far side of the span, our feet splashing into the thigh-deep water on the other side. We need a plan. We need a way out before this place swallows us whole.
I glance at Seraphine, noting the strain in her face, the exhaustion etched into every line of her body. She's barely keeping herself upright, let alone capable of mounting any sort of rescue or escape attempt. It's up to me, I realize with a sinking feeling. I'm the only one with the strength left to do something.
But what? To go back for Varikka is certain death - the creatures will be on us in seconds, and the water's already waist-deep at the bridge's end. To press onward into the unknown tunnels seems just as foolish, given the rising water and the multiplying threats. There has to be another way, I think desperately as Seraphine sags against me, her breath coming in ragged gasps. We can't keep running forever. We need a plan. A strategy. Something - anything - that will get us out of this nightmare alive.
I look around wildly, my eyes darting from the bridge to the tunnel walls to the churning water and back again. There has to be an answer here somewhere, some clue or hint of how to escape this place. Think, Merrin, I tell myself as Seraphine's grip on my arm loosens, her strength waning with every passing second. There has to be a way out. There just has to be.
