Phase: escalating

Merrin lunges forward with a desperate swing of her heavy mace, aiming for the creature's head as it clutches Varikka. The blow goes wide, striking instead against the pile of rubble with a loud CLANG that echoes through the cavern. Water surges up around them both, now waist-deep and rising fast. The ground beneath Seraphine's feet begins to shudder ominously as the entire structure groans in protest.
Merrin stumbles back, her weapon arm aching from the missed strike. "Fuck!" she hisses through gritted teeth. Varikka is still struggling, her head barely above water now as the creature tightens its grip and drags her deeper into the lake. Seraphine is trying to get up, but she's clearly dazed from her fall.
Merrin wades forward through the icy water, her mace held ready in both hands. "Hang on, Varikka!" she calls out, her voice barely audible over the roar of rushing water. "I'm coming!"
The cold water laps at Merrin's thighs as she moves deeper into the lake, and something slimy brushes against her legs beneath the surface. What the hell is going on? Varikka gasps, still clinging to Merrin for dear life. I don't know, Merrin replies through gritted teeth, but we need to move—fast.
She has to think fast, to find some way out of this rapidly flooding hellhole before it's too late...
The cold water swirls around Merrin's legs as she wades deeper into the lake, her heavy mace held at the ready. The surface ripples ominously in the dim torchlight, and something unseen brushes against her calves beneath the dark waves. What the hell is going on? Varikka gasps, still clinging to Merrin for dear life.
Merrin grits her teeth, her arms aching from the weight of her weapon. I don't know, she replies grimly, but we need to move—fast. The water's already up to their waists now, rising with terrifying speed. We can't stay here.
She scans the cavern walls desperately, searching for any way out—a ledge, a tunnel, anything—but the stone seems to stretch endlessly around them, punctuated only by those eerie glowing eyes. Shit, she mutters under her breath. Think, Merrin. Think!
Her gaze falls on the newly revealed passage in the far wall—dark and forbidding but potentially their only escape route. It's a risk, she thinks frantically, but it might be our only chance.
With a grim determination, Merrin starts to wade towards the passage, dragging Varikka with her. Hold on tight! she calls back over her shoulder. We're getting out of here!
The water surges around them both as they struggle through the icy depths, Merrin's heart pounding in her chest. Something brushes against her leg again—something large—and she feels a chill run down her spine.
They reach the passage just as the water reaches their chests, and Merrin hauls Varikka up onto solid ground with all her strength. *Panting heavily, she collapses beside her friend, both of them shivering from the cold.**
But there's no time to rest. The sound of rushing water grows louder behind them, and Merrin can feel the vibrations through the stone—as if the entire cavern is about to come crashing down.
She looks back at Varikka, her expression grim. We need to move, she says firmly. Now.
