The waterspout that had trapped Varikka is directly ahead of Merrin now, and through the churning water, she can make out her silhouette beneath the surface. She's still fighting against something unseen, her arms and legs thrashing wildly as she tries to break free from its grip. Merrin knows she has only seconds to act before it's too late.

With a surge of adrenaline, Merrin propels herself forward through the water, her powerful halfling legs carrying her swiftly across the remaining distance. As she nears Varikka, she can see the creature more clearly - a mass of writhing tentacles emerging from the depths, their suckers glistening wetly as they grasp at Varikka's limbs.

Merrin raises her crossbow, aiming for the creature's central mass. The bolt strikes true, sinking deep into the flesh, but the creature barely seems to notice. It continues its relentless pull, dragging Varikka deeper into the water with each passing moment.

Desperate now, Merrin fires again and again, each shot finding its mark but failing to stop the creature's advance. She can feel her bolts dwindling, knows she can't keep this up forever. The rising water is making it harder to aim, the current tugging at her legs with increasing force.

She glances back towards the shore, sees Seraphine standing there, her face etched with concern. Merrin knows she needs help, but what can a wizard do against something like this? She's about to call out when suddenly, the water around her begins to churn even more violently.

Another waterspout forms nearby, and Merrin watches in horror as Halie is pulled under by a second creature. The elf's scream echoes through the cavern before being cut off abruptly by the rushing water.

Merrin feels a surge of panic. She can't save Varikka and Halie both, not like this. The creatures are too powerful, the waters too treacherous. She has to make a decision - keep fighting alone or call for help and risk losing them both?

The choice is taken from her when yet another tentacle emerges from the depths, wrapping around her ankle and pulling her off balance. Merrin plunges beneath the surface, the world going dark as water rushes into her mouth and nose.

She struggles frantically, trying to break free, but the creature's grip is like iron. She can feel herself being dragged deeper, the pressure increasing with each meter descended. Her lungs burn for air, vision beginning to blur at the edges.

Just as she thinks all hope is lost, a burst of light illuminates the water around her. Seraphine has cast some kind of spell, creating a bubble of breathable air that surrounds Merrin. The wizard's voice echoes in her mind: "Hold on! I'm going to pull you out!"

Merrin feels a tugging at her body as Seraphine works to free her from the creature's grip. It's a desperate struggle against time and the creatures' relentless strength, but slowly, surely, she begins to move upwards.

The journey back to the surface is agonizingly slow, each second feeling like an eternity. Merrin can feel her strength fading, lungs burning with the need for air. But then, suddenly, she breaks through the surface, gasping and coughing as she fills her lungs with sweet, precious oxygen.

Seraphine hauls her onto a nearby ledge, both women collapsing in exhaustion. They exchange a look of shared relief and terror - they've survived this round, but the creatures still lurk below, and the rising water threatens to swallow them all.

"Thank you," Merrin manages between gasps. "I don't know what I would have done without your help."

Seraphine smiles weakly in return. "We're not out of this yet. We need to find a way to stop those creatures... and the rising water." She gestures towards the shore where Jeane stands, her expression unreadable. "And I have a feeling our friend there might have some ideas about how to handle whatever's left."

Merrin nods, pushing herself to her feet with Seraphine's help. Together, they make their way back to solid ground, both women acutely aware that the real challenges lie ahead.
