As Merrin wades forward, her crossbow at the ready, the dark form circling beneath the surface of the lake lunges, its massive tentacles snapping wildly. Merrin barely avoids being dragged under, her crossbow bolt striking the water mere inches from the creature's maw. The force of the impact sends a shockwave through the water, causing it to churn and foam even more violently. Seraphine's spell holds off the flood for a moment longer, but it's clear they won't be able to keep it at bay for much longer. The water level continues to rise, threatening to engulf them whole. Merrin knows they need to act fast if they want to save Varika. She looks around, taking in their surroundings, and spots a series of narrow ledges and overhangs along the lake's edge. "Seraphine, can you hold off the flood for just one more minute? We need to get Varrika out of there!"

Merrin

Merrin · Rogue

I let out a shout of alarm as the creature lunges at me, its tentacles whipping through the water with shocking speed. I barely manage to dodge out of the way, my crossbow bolt striking the surface mere inches from its gaping maw. The force of the impact sends a shockwave through the water, causing it to churn and foam even more violently. "Fuck!" I exclaim, struggling to keep my footing in the turbulent water. "That thing's not going to let us get close!"

I glance back at Seraphine, who's still holding off the flood with her magic. The water level is rising rapidly now, threatening to engulf us whole. I know we don't have much time left.

"Seraphine, can you hold off the flood for just one more minute?" I shout over the roar of the deluge. "We need to get Varikka out of there!"

I scan the ledges and overhangs along the lake's edge, looking for any way to reach Varikka without being dragged under myself. The creature is still circling beneath the surface, its dark form barely visible through the churning foam.

My mind races as I try to come up with a plan. We're out of options, and time is running out. I take a deep breath, steeling myself for what I know I have to do.

"Alright, here's the plan," I say, turning to Seraphine. "You keep the flood at bay for as long as you can. I'm going to try to get close enough to Varikka to pull her out of the water."

I grip my crossbow tightly, my knuckles white with tension. "It's our only chance. If we don't act now, we're all going to drown down here."

With that, I take a deep breath and start wading forward into the churning water, my heart pounding in my chest as I prepare to face whatever horrors await me in the depths of this godforsaken lake.

Seraphine

Seraphine · Wizard

I watch Merrin wade deeper into the churning water, my heart clenching in my chest at the sight of her determined face. The creature beneath the surface is still circling, its dark form a constant threat looming just out of sight. My own spell is weakening by the second, the floodwater rising higher with each passing moment. We're running out of time.
I take a deep breath, trying to focus my energy on the magic holding back the deluge. It's a fragile thing, this barrier of mine, and I can feel it straining under the immense pressure of the water above us. But if Merrin is going to have any chance of saving Varikka, I need to keep it up for as long as humanly possible.
"I'll do what I can," I call out over the roar of the flood, my voice strained with effort. "But you be careful in there! That thing... it's not going to let you get close without a fight."
My eyes dart between Merrin and the water, searching for any sign of Varrika. She has to be still alive down there somewhere, right? We can't have come this far just to lose her now.
I adjust my stance, planting my feet firmly on the slick stone floor of the cavern. The water is already lapping at my knees, and I know it won't be long before it's up to my waist. But I push that thought aside, concentrating all my willpower on the spell before me.
"Merrin!" I shout, my voice rising above the noise. "If you see Varrika, don't try to fight the creature! Just grab her and get out of there as fast as you can!"
With that, I turn my full attention back to the barrier, pouring every ounce of my magical strength into it. The water is pressing down on us like a physical weight, and I can feel the strain in my arms and shoulders as I hold up my staff, trying to keep the flood at bay just a little longer.
