Shadow of the Ancients / Run 008 / Main Story
Round 30 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

The guardian's staff glows brighter, and its shadowy form seems to grow even larger as your spell builds. Jeane's eyes flicker with a mix of fear and fascination, while Halie clutches her holy symbol tighter, her face pale. Varrika shifts her stance, mace at the ready, as Merrin's hand remains close to her dagger, prepared for anything. Your chant reaches its crescendo, and the air around you crackles with energy. The guardian's eyes narrow, and it raises a hand, as if to stop your spell. But instead of blocking it, its staff seems to... harmonize with yours? The runes on its staff pulse in time with your incantation, creating a resonant frequency that makes the air vibrate. Suddenly, the chamber falls silent, and the runes' glow intensifies. A low, thrumming noise fills the air, making it difficult to think clearly. The guardian's form begins to shift, its shadowy edges blurring as it... transforms? Into something new, something that seems to be born from the very fabric of the runes themselves.
I watch Seraphine weave her spell, my heart racing. This is it—the moment of truth. The guardian's staff pulses in time with her chanting, and for a terrifying instant, I think it's going to strike her down where she stands. But instead... something else happens. The air crackles with power, the runes blazing so bright they hurt my eyes. And then—the sound. That low thrumming noise fills the chamber, vibrating through my bones and making it hard to think clearly. I stumble back a step, clutching my holy symbol tighter. This isn't right. This isn't how magic is supposed to work—especially not when dealing with something as ancient and twisted as this. "Seraphine!" I gasp, reaching out a hand towards her without thinking. "What have you done?"
I feel my hair stand on end as the thrumming intensifies, vibrating deep in my bones. The air feels thick, charged with an energy I've never experienced before—it's like every rune in the chamber is humming in unison, creating a symphony of power that makes my head spin. "I don't think I did anything at all," I call back to Halie over the noise, my voice straining to be heard. My eyes are wide as I watch the guardian's form shift and blur, its shadowy edges seeming to melt into the very stone of the walls and floor.
The sword on the pedestal begins to glow even brighter, its light pulsing in time with the runes. I take a shaky step closer, my staff still held out before me like a shield. The spell I cast—the one that should have broken the ward—seems to have had the opposite effect. Instead of weakening the guardian, it has somehow... empowered it? Or perhaps unlocked something within the tower itself?
I risk a glance at Jeane, who looks just as stunned as I feel. She's staring at the sword with an almost reverent expression, her own staff held at the ready but not yet raised to attack. Halie is frantically chanting under her breath, her holy symbol held high as if warding off evil spirits. Merrin has drawn her dagger, her eyes darting around the room, looking for any sign of immediate danger. And Varikka—she looks ready to charge forward regardless of the magical chaos swirling around us.
"I don't understand it," I mutter, my gaze fixed on the shimmering form of the guardian as it continues to transform, becoming less solid and more... fluid? "This wasn't supposed to happen. The spell should have—" My words are cut off by a sudden lurch in the floor beneath our feet. The entire chamber tilts, the sudden movement throwing us all off balance. "Look out!" I cry, scrambling to keep my footing as the world seems to shift around us.*
I barely manage to keep my footing as the floor lurches beneath us, my hands scrabbling at the stone for purchase. The thrumming energy in the air seems to intensify, making it hard to think straight. Whatever spell Seraphine cast, it's clear it had unintended consequences. "Everyone, watch your step!" I call out, my voice nearly drowned out by the cacophony of sound and energy filling the chamber.
I risk a glance at the guardian, my heart sinking as I see its form continue to shift and change. The sword on the pedestal is glowing so brightly now that it's hard to look at directly, and the runes covering every surface seem to pulse in time with its light. "Halie!" I yell over the noise, pointing at the rune-covered walls. "Can you do something about those damned runes? They're making my head spin!"
I take a cautious step forward, my hand still gripping my dagger. The air feels thick, charged with a power I can't begin to understand. But one thing is clear—whatever happens next, we need to be ready for it. "Varikka, keep an eye on that thing," I say, nodding towards the guardian's shimmering form. "Jeane, Halie—we need to find a way to stabilize this room before the whole tower comes down on our heads."
Jeane feels the floor shift beneath her boots, a sudden lurch that sends adrenaline spiking through her veins. The air thrums with dark energy, pressing in like a physical weight, and she grits her teeth against the urge to lash out telekinetically at whatever's causing it. Her wings instinctively half-spread for balance before she forces them back down—useless in these cramped quarters, and too much of a target if whatever's outside decides to investigate the noise. "Merrin's right," she calls out, her voice tight with barely-controlled fear, "those runes are doing something. Halie—the silver symbol you carry, can it counter this?"
She raises her staff in a loose guard position, eyes darting between the shimmering guardian and the pulsing sword. The blade's light is too bright to look at directly now, bleaching everything in its radius into stark contrast. She blinks rapidly, trying to clear her vision, but every time she looks away it takes a moment for her sight to readjust—her demonic nature makes her particularly vulnerable to such intense magical radiation. "Varikka," she snaps, "hold your position by the gate! If that thing gets through and you're in melee range with no backup, we'll have to fight our way past it to get to you."
