Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

I trace the pulsing runes with a fingertip—careful not to touch them directly—and my eyes narrow in understanding. This isn't simple warding magic; it's bound to something older, something that feeds on decay and fear itself. The scent of death is strong here because this gate has been sealed for centuries with corpses buried beneath it as fuel for the spellwork. I draw back a step, my wings twitching instinctively. Halie, keep your holy symbol visible but be ready to shield yourself—blessed metal won't break such bonds easily. Merrin, circle left and look for any physical weaknesses in the stone or hinges that might bypass the need to dispel the magic entirely. To Seraphine: Your observational skills are keen, but we don't have time to document every rune before we're noticed. We need a solution—quickly. I turn to Varrika with a slight smirk despite the seriousness. I appreciate your cautious optimism, dwarf. But if this was merely 'dark magic,' we wouldn't smell dead things from leagues away. I reach into my robe and withdraw a small vial of shimmering crimson liquid—a potent counter-agent to shadow-binding runes I'd prepared weeks ago, tapping into my own demonic bloodline for its creation. This should temporarily disrupt the seal long enough for us to slip inside. But everyone stay close—I don't know how many skeletons are waiting beyond this threshold. I step forward and carefully uncork the vial, then drip three precise drops onto different runes—the center, left edge, and right edge of the gate. May the shadows twist upon themselves... The liquid hisses as it contacts the stone, releasing tendrils of sickly orange smoke that writhe across the symbols.

The runes flicker—once, twice—and then with a grinding groan, the heavy iron door swings inward a few feet. The stench intensifies tenfold, and something cold and wet drips from within. Move now. Before whatever's inside realizes we're here.

Halie

Halie · Cleric

I step up to the gate beside Merrin, my heavy mace in hand, and trace one of the glowing runes with my eyes. The cold light makes my skin crawl—wrong magic, ancient and hungry. "This is more than just a lock," I say quietly, glancing around at the dark woods encroaching on us. "Something's feeding this thing." I reach into my pack for my silver holy symbol of the Goddess of Light, clutching it tightly. "Jeane, can you analyze the ward structure? Merrin, look for any mechanical weaknesses—a lever, a hidden latch."

I press the cool metal of the holy symbol against one of the less actively pulsing runes, murmuring a prayer for protection.

Merrin

Merrin · Rogue

I squint at the pulsing runes, my brow furrowed in concentration. The violet light seems to throb in time with my heartbeat, a sinister rhythm that sets my teeth on edge. I can practically feel the malevolence radiating off the gate, a tangible weight pressing down on my shoulders. "Alright, let's see what we're dealing with here," I mutter, crouching down for a closer look at the locking mechanism. My nimble fingers trace the runes' complex patterns, searching for any gaps or weaknesses I can exploit. The cold metal of the gate is slick under my touch, beaded with moisture that seems to seep from the very stones themselves. I glance up at the others, a wry grin tugging at the corner of my mouth. "This isn't going to be as simple as picking a lock," I say, keeping my voice light despite the unease coiling in my gut. "But then again, nothing ever is, eh?"

Seraphine

Seraphine · Wizard

I step closer, my long elven ears twitching at the faint whisper of decay on the air. The gate's runes pulse with a cold, malevolent energy, casting shifting patterns of violet light across our faces. My gaze locks onto one particular rune, a complex knot-work of lines that seems to writhe and twist as if alive. "This is no ordinary barrier," I murmur, more to myself than anyone else. I reach into my robes, pulling out a small, ornate magnifying glass crafted from mithril. The glass is clear as mountain spring water. "These symbols... they're ancient. Probably predating the current undead infestation by centuries." I hold the magnifier up to one of the larger runes, leaning in close, my long silver hair falling forward like a curtain around me.
My heart hammers against my ribs as I examine the intricate patterns, trying to decipher their meaning. The runes feel like they're looking back at me, hungry and aware. A shiver runs down my spine. "If we can understand this ward, perhaps we can find a way through without alerting whatever lies within." I turn slightly, addressing the others over my shoulder, my voice hushed with urgency. "Jeane, your expertise in arcane lore would be invaluable here. Merrin, Halie... I'll need you to stand watch. This place feels... wrong. Alive with something we can't see yet."

Varrika

Varrika · Fighter

I grip my mace tighter, the worn wood familiar against my callused palm. The gate's pulsing runes make my eyes water, a sickly violet that seems to bore into my skull. "Aye, this is no ordinary lock," I mutter, my voice a low rumble. "Feels like it's got teeth." I step forward, studying the gate's surface for any weaknesses or mechanisms. The scent of decay is thick here, clinging to my skin and hair like a shroud. "Merrin, Halie - keep your eyes peeled. If anything tries to break through while we're working on this, I want to know about it."
