Round 1 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

The crumbling stone tower loomed before them, its entrance sealed by an ancient rune-covered gate that faintly breathed cold violet light. The air was heavy with the scent of decay and rot, carried on the misty veil that shrouded the Whispering Woods. Weeds and vines had claimed the tower's stones as their own, wrapping them in a tangled web of green and brown. The gate's runes pulsed with a malevolent energy, casting an eerie glow across the surrounding terrain. To the left, the trees seemed to lean in, their branches like skeletal fingers reaching for the tower's crumbling walls. The wind rustled through the leaves, whispering secrets that only the woods themselves could understand. A faint chill ran down the spine of each party member, a reminder that they were not alone in this forsaken place. Before the gate, the party stood in a tight cluster, their faces set with determination and apprehension. Jeane's eyes narrowed as she examined the runes, while Halie's hand rested on the hilt of her holy symbol. Varrika fidgeted with the lockpicks in her belt, her brow furrowed in concentration. Seraphine's gaze drifted to the tower's entrance, her eyes gleaming with a mixture of curiosity and trepidation. Merrin stood at the edge of the group, her eyes scanning the surrounding woods as if searching for hidden dangers. The gate remained sealed, its secrets locked within. The party waited, poised on the threshold of their perilous quest.
Jeane circles the perimeter slowly, her red eyes scanning every stone and rune. The gate is warded with dark magics—see how the light pulses? She traces symbols in the air that mirror the ones on the stones. This is old work, pre-Common tongue. Likely Elvish or even older. Her wings rustle slightly as she leans closer.
The runes are layered. Base protection charm, secondary binding ward... and something else beneath. Something wrong. She pulls a small crystal from her robes—a scrying stone—and holds it near the gate. The magic is thick here—it's been feeding on itself for centuries. We can't just smash through this without setting off every alarm in the tower. Halie, she calls over her shoulder, voice cool and commanding, Come here with your holy symbol. Let's test if divine power has any effect on these seals before we try more... destructive methods.
I approach the gate with careful steps, my silver holy symbol held out before me like a shield. The stench here is foul—death and decay mixed with something else, something wrong. The runes pulse with an icy light that makes my skin crawl.
Jeane, can you break down what those symbols mean? Specifically, the ones that look like eyes or mouths? I ask, my voice steady despite the uneasy flutter in my stomach. Merrin, Varrika—stay close. We don't know what might be listening. Seraphine, I notice her already halfway up the wall, fingers tracing mortar lines. Seraphine! The ground floor first. That's our objective. Don't get ahead of yourself. I mutter a silent prayer to my goddess for patience and clarity.
From my pack, I produce a small vial of holy water and anoint my mace with it. Let's not be heroes—yet. We observe, we plan, then we act. This place feels... hungry.
I approach the gate with a blend of trepidation and curiosity, my halfling eyes keenly scanning every nook and cranny for traps or weaknesses. The air is thick with the stench of decay, and I can feel a creeping chill emanating from the pulsing runes. "Ahh, looks like someone's been trying to keep the party out," I quip, forcing a light tone despite the unease twisting my gut.
Crouching down, I peer at the base of the gate, searching for any sign of pressure plates or hidden mechanisms. "Jeane, Halie, keep an eye out while I take a closer look. If anything starts to glow or make noises, give me a shout and I'll come running...well, scurrying actually." I flash them a quick grin before turning my attention back to the gate, my nimble fingers already reaching for my lockpicks.
I draw close to the ancient gate, my sharp elven eyes tracing the complex patterns of the runes that cover its surface. The cold, violet light they emit prickles against my skin, raising gooseflesh on my arms despite the warmth of the day. My fingers twitch with the instinct to sketch the designs in my field journal, but I resist, knowing time is precious.
Jeane's assessment echoes what I've seen myself - this magic is old and powerful, far beyond anything we've encountered so far in our travels. The air here feels heavy, charged with a malevolent energy that makes the fine hairs on my neck stand on end. A shiver runs down my spine as Halie speaks, her holy symbol seeming to flicker under the rune-light.
I crouch down near the base of the gate, where the vines have begun to creep in, searching for any gaps in the structure. My ears pick up the faint sound of bones rattling deep within the tower, a chilling reminder of what awaits us inside. I feel a familiar thrill of excitement mixed with deep apprehension. This is the kind of magic that can grant immense power... but it often demands an equally great price.
Turning back to the group, I address Merrin, my voice steady despite the tremor in my gut. "Merrin, do you see any signs of a secondary lock? Or perhaps a pressure plate nearby?" My gaze flicks to Varrika, the most formidable fighter among us. "Varrika, if we need to break through, I'd advise using your hammer on this lower support here." I point to a specific stone, already planning our next moves.
Varrika steps forward, her heavy boots crunching on the gravel path. She eyes the pulsing runes warily, her weathered hands resting on the haft of her mace. The dwarf's voice rumbles deep in her chest as she speaks. "Dark magic, eh? Figures this place would be booby-trapped." She hawks and spits to the side, her grim expression hardening. "Alright, listen up. Halie, keep that holy symbol of yours ready. Might need to call on your goddess if things go sour. Jeane, see if you can figure out what those runes do. Don't go touchin' 'em without tellin' us though."
She turns to the towering gate, her keen eyes searching for any cracks or weaknesses. "Merrin, I want you checkin' for hidden latches or pressure plates. This lot won't make it easy for us to get in." Her voice drops to a mutter as she stares at the crumbling stones. "Should've known this'd be more than just a simple break-in."
