Phase: escalating

The pool's surface began to ripple with an otherworldly energy, its magic surging outward in visible waves that distorted the air around it. Merrin felt a jolt of adrenaline course through her veins as she watched the water churn, her grip tightening on her crossbow. The figure on the far shore had raised its hand again, and now the rocks at their feet were rearranging themselves once more, spelling out a new warning in bold letters: "Turn back now."
Varrika crouched down beside the message, her scarred hands tracing the outline of each stone as she studied the pattern. Her expression was grim, her eyes narrowed in concentration. "These aren't just stones," she growled, more to herself than Merrin. "There's a pattern here—a warning maybe." She glanced up at Merrin, her gaze sharp and assessing. "What do you think? Should we heed the warning or push forward?"
Merrin hesitated, her eyes darting between Varrika and the churning pool. The figure in the water was beginning to take shape now, its features becoming clearer with each passing moment. She could feel a tremor of fear working its way up her spine, but she pushed it down, forcing herself to focus on the task at hand.
"I don't know," she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper. "But I do know that standing here doing nothing isn't an option. We came here for a reason—to prove our worthiness and unlock the secrets of the Time-Splitting Sword. And I'm not about to let some mysterious figure in a pool scare me off before we even get started."
